Whether epicure, foodie, or otherwise gourmet,
we trust those who love to eat, drink and play
and gastronomes over the world from afar
agree on some favorites of great Pinot Noir.

Wading in Pinot Noir

Adore Pinot Noir but tire of wading through seas of underwhelming attempts?  Trust Olympians.
Long before Rio upset Chicago for its chance to host the 2016 games, America took its turn to play parvenu against the old guard and rose to drub the establishment.

Wine Olympics
The year is 1979 and French wine still reigns supreme. The Gault Millau (one of France's most prestigious restaurant guides) hosts the World Wine Olympics and wine enthusiasts sit up in their chairs to take notice.  Ever since the 1976 Judgement of Paris, the world has been especially keen to see if judges are held in rapt attention by the surprising upsets of aspiring New World wineries.  To great astonishment, Eyrie's 1975 Reserve Pinot Noir wins first place while Trefethen Vineyards' 1976 is named the world's best Chardonnay.  Beaune's very gracious Robert Drouhin of Maison Joseph Drouhin, comes in behind, conceding to Trefethen as "the standard by which other California Chardonnays are judged."

Soon to follow
At a remach a year later, Robert Drouhin savored a taste of curious victory when his 1959 Chambolle-Musigny came in first by two tenths of a point ahead of David Lett's 1975 Eyrie Reserve Pinot Noir.  Such close competition catapulted Oregon Pinot Noir into recognition and Eyrie Vineyards in particular onto the lips of Pinophiles the world over.  One among these new believers was the provident Robert Drouhin who with great foresight bought parcels of prime property for his Oregon vineyards of the delicious and dependable Domaine Drouhin.
