High School Admissions for the Class of 2010

Ciccone and 8th Graders March 2010
Dear Friends of the Academy,

Springtime has arrived in Baltimore and along with it many high school admissions decisions for our graduating 8th grade students.  The young men of the class of 2010 have been admitted at Loyola Blakefield, Calvert Hall College High School, McDonogh School,  Cristo Rey Jesuit, Gilman, West Nottingham Academy, Mt. St. Joseph's High School and more admissions decisions arrive in the coming days.

Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy prepares inner city boys to gain admission to the finest college preparatory high schools in the region.  Since our founding in 1993, 99% of Academy graduates have received a high school diploma, in a city where less than 54% of males graduate from high school.  Our extended school year, longer school day, dedicated faculty, and smaller class sizes create an educational environment that works!

Sincerely,

Hope for Haiti - A Huge Success
Haiti Assembly March 2010 - students
In the spirit of true Men for Others, the students of Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy raised an astonishing amount of money in response to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. The initial goal for the two week contest as envisioned by English teacher Mary Trichter was to raise $300 in pennies and small change for relief efforts, but by the end of the first week, $500 had been raised and a challenge was issued to double the goal.  The students put their hearts and souls into the contest, and despite the interruption of two major snowstorms, ultimately raised a whopping $1393 to be donated to Catholic Relief Services for their work in Haiti.

On Monday, March 22, 2010, CRS reps Nora Collins and John Rivera came to the Academy to thanks the boys for their Smiling studentefforts.  Nora engaged the students with an entertaining and informative talk on the work of CRS around the world, inviting 8 students to help with a show and tell about CRS' efforts in public health, peace building, and promoting fair trade in the developing world.  Academy students Justin Brooks, Tyrek Corbett, and Dontaise Woodbridge presented a check to CRS on behalf of their fellow students.  The assembly ended with Ms. Collins and Mr. Rivera expressing their appreciation in the Creole language of Haiti - Mesi Anpil - Thank you very much to the students and families of the Academy

Exploring & Learning in Harpers' Ferry, WV
Thirteen boys accompanied by Mr. Ken Walsh and Mr. Joe Brune spent three day in Harpers' Ferry, WV during their spring break participating in a team-building, ecology, and history education program sponsored by the National Park Trust.  The students stayed in a lodge at an Harpers Ferry Knotoutdoor education camp, learned about stream ecology, GPS navigation, Civil War history, and the beginnings of the NAACP.  Students also explored the forest during an hour-long night hike.  One 6th grader said, "We learned more about nature than about landmarks. We went into streams and found a variety of animals like crayfish, water spiders, and caddis flies."
One team challenge activity had the students working together to un-tie a human knot.  During a day trip into historic Harpers' Ferry, students participated in a history scavenger hunt learning about John Brown, local Civil War battles, Storer College, and the Niagara Movement.

A Great Day of Lacrosse Action
Smiling studentMany thanks to Konica Minolta and Jeff Dudley of Inside Lacrosse for making it possible for 23 students to attend the Face Off Classic at M & T Bank Stadium on March 6.  The boys watched all 3 games, with special cheers for the Loyola University Men's Team.  SILA coach Sebastian Price said "It was a great experience for the students to watch some very competitive lacrosse and spend the day with each other."  Special thanks to Coach Price, teacher Erin Conway and trustee Fr. Tim Brown, S.J. for giving our boys such a great experience.

Academy Boys in Annapolis

The Academy has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the Association of Maryland Pilots.  Each year, the Association supports our annual 8th grade trip to the Maryland State House in Annapolis.  The Smiling studentAssociation makes arrangements for lunch for our students, and to have them recognized in the State House gallery.  February is a great time for the visit as the students have the opportunity to see the legislature in session.  This year, Academy students got a first- hand lesson in how our state government works by observing committee hearings on legislation concerning limits on campaign spending and terms of office. Students also met several of the legislators including Delegates Keith Haynes, Ruth Kirk and Melvin Stukes. In April, the students will recreate what they learned that day in a "Mock Legislature" where they will be advocating and arguing actual bills.   Many thanks to Pete White and Joe Wyatt of the Association of Maryland Pilots for a great day!
