Mary and Claire photo by Vintage Pin Up Photography
This may sound familiar but if you missed it: I am starting a Vintage Pin-Up Photography business: click on the and learn more and become a fan. Or better yet call for a session!
The image above was taken for Mary and Claire of Bella Boutique in Hamilton. The image will be the official poster for a benefit in the Fall.
The beginning of July I spent a week in Sun Valley on assignment. It was an amazing conference and what always impresses me is the incredible staff, fellow photographers, and support we receive. For me, that is more impressive than the incredible people I get to photograph. The photograph of the horse above is on my last day in Sun Valley. There was a burst of rain, a rainbow and some amazing clouds. The image is for sale and if you are interested let me know and I will send you sizes and prices.
As my Vintage Pin Up Photography business grows and I discover more about the genre it becomes more fascinating. I was turned onto a site "PinUp Lifestyle for other folk interested in the subculture.
I continue to work on the staples of my business Weddings and Senior Portraits. The last wedding I complete yielded 1400 images which I narrowed down to my favorite 700. Thank you Adobe Lightroom 3.
As I mentioned earlier the family made it back to Stickerville after a 9 year hiatus. This time I shot more film clips than stills and had great time. I hope to have some video of the event in the late fall on my website as I transition into more film making.
I have to admit I slowed down with the product shots for now but will get back into in the fall.
Continuing news....

Runner Mt. Sentinal photo by Steven H. Begleiter
When I go out on a shoot, I think about the lens I want use and stay with it.
I don't like to carry around a lot of lenses and I I like fast lenses. So one of my all time favorites is the Canon 200 f2.8, especially when I am outdoors. I have had this lens for about 15 years.
The above image was shot with my 200mm at f2.8. I like this image because it tells a story. Not your typical runner ( young and clean cut) He is older, maybe in his 60's, a ponytail, and an inspiration for us older folk.
I was actually photographing the transition of the dirt road into the city road when looking through my viewfinder I thought a dog (there is that word again) appeared, it turned out to be fox with a bird in its mouth...I only got one shot, unfortunately a little soft, but then I saw this runner coming up the mountain.
I took a few shots of him, he smiled...then waiting till he passed me and realized what a good shot it would be with him running toward the city. Fortunately he was not running too much farther and decided to turn back and go down the hill. I preset my camera to AV and set my aperture at 2.8, set my auto focus to Servo and waited.
This turned out to be my favorite frame with his ponytail swaying and his foot high off the ground. Not your typical stereotype of a runner another reason to like this image.
Next time challenge yourself go out on an adventure and only bring one lens, preferable a fixed lens ( not a zoom lens) and see what you come up with...have fun.

Dear Readers,
August, the dog days are upon us. The brightest star (in the Northern Hemisphere) resides in the constellation Canis Major (THE BIG DOG) is called Sirius. The origin of the term "dog days of summer." No, I am not getting into pet photographer but I am having fun with Vintage Pin-Up. This month also marks the 2- year anniversary at my Missoula studio. woohoo.
I had three more sessions in July, including a Pinup session with the great fashion designer Nicole Katherine and the ladies of the fabulous retail store BellaBoutique.
We ( Frankie's Mercantile and Katie S.) did celebrate "Ladies Night Out" with a drawing for a free Pinup Session and the winner was Robin Rose. A good part of the month was spent in Sun Valley on assignment photographing some of the most influential people in the world. I clocked in 48 hours of shooting in 4 days. I am happy to announce, after much deliberation, that I have upgraded my technology with a new Macbook Pro and the latest upgrades of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. This will enable me to give my clients greater service by creating a faster and more seamless digital work-flow (wow did I say that?) I did manage to edit and upload 700 (down from 1400) wedding images of the Erik and Sabrina wedding from June in between all the other work and I have to say I LOVED the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens I borrowed from the Canon Professional service and some day, when I turn a profit, I will have to own one. Donations are accepted. I was happy to get back to Stickerville in July with my family and take some more photos and film clips. It had been a 9 year hiatus. It was hot, the Dearborn river was cool and the old-timey music was infectious. All four of us including our dog patch slept in a tent under a canopy of stars including Sirius the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation (well, that tied in really well.)
August are truly the dog days, things slow down a bit, so do assignments. This will give a chance to catch up my new technology, work on some marketing and organize my office.
Of Course, I never know what assignments may come up from week to week. So stay tuned.
I have "pitched" a new book idea to my publisher and waiting to hear back... I look forward to your comments and suggestions. Remember to click on the links for more info.
Please feel free to share this newsletter with your friends and family. Be Well, Steven

The Photographer's Almanac:

Annie Leibovitz
1949 to Present. Anytime anyone hears that I was " Annie's assistant" they always ask me " was it true that she is tough to work with?" and my reply: " all true and even more".
I was her assistant from 1981 to 1982, the transitional year. She was agonizing whether to sign a contract with Vanity Fair that would end her career with Rolling Stone magazine. She was also working on her first book and that was the year she cleaned herself up. I was her only assistant at the time, she now has 3 and my job was to get her from point A to point B, set up her lighting, and absorb her anxiety. Perhaps one day I will write more specifically about "the year of living dangerously."
Enough about me and now about Annie, first hand. Annie was an art student in San Francisco when she learned about a new magazine called "Rolling Stone". She went over to them and asked if she could photograph for them, the publisher, Jann Wenner, said " why not John Lennon was in town, go photograph him." She did it appeared on the cover and two years later she was chief photographer... the rest is history.
As Annie told me when I first starting working for her, " a fortune teller told me that I would have an amazing career and a difficult time with relationships."
Annie is a concept photographer who does a lot of research on her subjects before photographing them, and in my opinion, uses her anxieties to drive her creative engine. If you are not sure who she is just look at the covers of Rolling Stone from it's inceptions to 1982, covers of Vanity Fair from 1982 on, the " Got Milk" ad campaigns to the award winning American Express Ads.
What I learned from Annie? If everyone is running in one direction run the other direction.
That is probably why I continue to push my art and why I admire Annie so much. As difficult as she was to work for I believe we shared a mutual respect for each other. Now if only I could get her kids to have a play date with my kids, that would be cool.
