As I had mentioned above I am starting a Vintage Pin-Up Photography business: click on the and learn more and become a fan. Or better yet call for a session!
What does that mean? Well a lot of time spent researching, branding, marketing and "see what happens." The idea came from a client who saw the service in Texas and forwarded me an e-mail saying " wouldn't this be great if we had this in Missoula? So the gears stared turning in my creative brain and the ball began to roll. It sounded like fun, photographically challenging, and something unique. I have always been into Film Noir, fashion styles in the 40's and 50's and kitsch. First came the research, going back to the 1920's ( the roaring 20's ) and up to the infamous ( some would say notorious) Bettie Page, she had to be one of Madonna's influences.
I stopped there since I wanted to keep it Vintage. At the present I am testing with some models, although there seems to be interests before I have started any promotion, I have already gotten two bookings. I do have my pricing and some samples so give me a ring and book a session.
For those of you who have been following this newsletter for more than a year, you might remember my trip to Sun Valley last July. As you may remember I can't really write about it publicly but can tell you I have been hired for a week to cover a big event. This is where all my experience as photojournalist and sports photographer come in handy. Sorry, that is all the information I can share.
Mintage Airstream is back and called me to do some more images of their newest renovation of Airstream. In addition David Regan is gearing up for his latest ceramic creations and needs environmental photos of his artwork. The Erik and Sabrina wedding was a blast. It was at the U in Missoula and they could not have asked for a more perfect day to get married, crip blue skies and about 80 degrees. My day started at Burton Hair Saloon and ended with the big wedding bash at the ballroom at the University Center.
Senior Portraits get a lot of " click through" so I am extended the special for another month.
Dakota Senior Portrait | Book your Senior Portrait before July 30th and take 20% off the session.

Product Photography portfolio is just about finished and will be ready to viewing. I am very excited about the work and will start sending out the portfolio end of July to Ad agencies around the country. If you are in the need of creative product photography give a ring and I will be happy to send you my " Shiny Objects of Desire" portfolio out to you.

Surprising Photo Products and Tips
| Auto ISO way to Go

Makhesh photo by Steven H. Begleiter
I know as a professional I should not be revealing to you that I use "auto ISO" sometimes on assignment but I do. In fact I did not even know it existed, being a purist of low ISO for better detail, most of my career. Since I got my new Canon 7D, I started to explore the options. How did tis happen?
I was borrowing a 70mm to 200mm f2.8 from Canon Professional service and was photographing my family. I knew hand holding a large lens and trying to capture moving objects, basically my fast moving children wouldn't work. I held my breath and switched my ISO to A ( automatic) and to my pleasant surprise was able to capture moments without blur. OK so my ISO was around 1600 to 2500 and there will be noise but I would have never captured those special moments without a lot of additional lighting.
In reality most of these image are not going to blown up to poster size to reveal all the noise. If they are, so be it...it will be my style.
Final not Auto ISO can also be found on other digital cameras..check out your manual.
So give the ISO setting A a try..you may never go back.

Dear Readers,
It is hard to believe we are into July already. June started with the creation of Vintage Pin-Up Photography and ended with the Garcia Wedding and trip back to Sun Valley. The above image is a series of photos I created for Charles Martin. It was our tribute to July 4th.
Why do I do this Newsletter? I have to confess that I wondered if this newsletter is worth all the time so I looked at my newsletter stats for June and found that 24% opened this e-mail and felt a little down. Then I compared it to the industry standard, which surprised me at an 18% open rate. So I felt it might be worth continuing and wanted to thank the 24% of you for taking the time. ( For the other 76% who just delete, please hit the "unsubscribe" so I can take you off the list, it's OK I don't take it personally. Of course, you may not have read this since you deleted...lol.)
I also track the "click through" with is a whopping 28% , compared to an industry standard of 22%. This stat helps me understand what your interests are, and what I should put in and leave out
Senior Portraits topped the list then products and companies I have used or worked for came next. Then weddings and special offerings ended the list.
I have a feeling there might be some interests in Vintage Pin-up Photography, so become a friend at and stay up to date with new images. I will continue to post this newsletter monthly till my stats drop significantly.
July will focus more on Vintage Pin- Up Photography sessions, Mintage Airstream and David Regan Ceramicist photo sessions, after I return from my week long assignment in Sun Valley. On a more personal note my daughter turns 6, wow....
Of Course, I never know what assignments may come up from week to week. So stay tuned. I look forward to your comments and suggestions. Remember to click on the links for more info.
Please feel free to share this newsletter with your friends and family. Be Well, Steven

The Photographer's Almanac:
 Philippe Halsman and Marilyn Monroe
Halsman 1906-1979
As I begin any new photographic endeavor I do a lot research. Learning about Pin-Up Photography I thought it would be appropriate to explore a photographer of that era, the 40's and 50's. Although he was not a Pin-Up photographer he was very influential in developing the illustrative portrait for the "big picture" magazine "Life." Including his wonderful images of Marylin Monroe, Albert Einstein, Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn. An auspicious beginning: Accused of patricide in 1928, Halsman was to serve 4 years in prison but with letters form Thomas Mann and Albert Einstein in Halsman's defense he was able to leave prison in 1931 but never to return to Austria. He moved to France and began a successful career as a Fashion photographer. Hi dark style and sharp focus was a welcome change from the soft focus fashion portraits of that time. He shot for Elizabeth Arden in America and was notice by Life Magazine where he began shooting covers. It was his long term artistic collaborations with celebrities and famous Artist that helped create some of his iconic images, most notably Salvador Dali. His image entitled "Dali Atomicus" is a classic.
I had the privilege of hearing a lecture from his wife about that image. According to her The shot took a full day to take. He shot the image with a large format camera, an 8 x 10 and after each shot his assistant would process the 8 x 10 sheet to see if they got the shot. There was no Polaroid or digital back in 1948. So each image took about an hour from pressing the shutter button to processing of film. I believe she said he had taken about 14 sheets of film that day and went through 5 cats, (none where hurt)and gallons of water. What a classic photo.

Dali Atomicus 1948
What a great visionary and sense of humor. For more on Philippe Halsman go to National Portrait Gallery.
