Surprising Photo Products and Tips
| The Gallery is being discontinued due to the change in the studio with Frankie's Mercantile taking over the front space. Don't fret, in its' place will be fabulous photo tips and photo gear you can use.
From time to time I will have an exhibit and a workshop in the shooting space. I will keep you posted.
Eye Protection In this issue my product recommendation is truly a Montana story. I wear glasses, too old for contacts. I once bought transitional glasses to protect my eyes from the sun, bad idea, couldn't read the LCD on my camera. Clip-ons were too expensive, I broke two pair. So what is a photographer to do? Well, I found my answer when I was picking up my chain saw for maintenance. I found Husqvarne, the makers of my chain saw, make awesome eye protection in different colors. They fit perfectly over my glasses and wrap around, I love them. The are only $10 dollars, I bought three pair. 223 West Front (and Ryman) If you have questions or would like more information call 546-7604 or e-mail us at

Dear Readers,
Welcome to the May Newsletter. April was a stellar month. It started off by finding a great tenant Frances, for the front of the Studio. Her store, "Frankie's Mercantile", a great place to shop and a great addition to Historic Downtown Missoula. Come on by or call 543-0898 for more information. As you may have noticed, my portrait has changed. I am sporting my new $10 shades which I write about in the new "Products Section". My Airstream photo was selected as the photo of the week by CalumetPhoto. A nice recognition of one of my visual obsessions, not to mention the additional 300 hits that day to my website. Three of my photo books were selected, for Best Photography Books.
MAC on Campus selected four of my photographs to be used as examples for their launch of an educational site for photographers.
I had some fun photo shoots in April with the Wheeler Family and Uncle Sam. Some bookings came in for my Mother's Day Special, call for more info.
May in Montana is spectacular, rain, snow, hot sun and rainbows so come and visit.
I look forward to your comments and when you are in the neighborhood stop on by. Remember to click on the links for more info.
Please feel free to share this newsletter with your friends and family. Be Well, Steven

The Photographer's Almanac:
 Edward S. Curtis:
1868-1952 A truly obsessed photographer who documented what was called "The North American Indian" wth a forward written by President Theodore Roosevelt." It was a series, 20 volumes of photographs of Native American life in the Northwest. The work was commissioned by JP Morgan and Curtis was paid $75,000 for the work in which would consume the rest of his life, over 40,000 images were taken.
As any great artist his work was controversial for being too staged and not authentic enough.
Which was partially true, but no can deny the power of his images, the lasting impact and the passion of his mission.
Back then photographs were taken with large heavy cameras, one sheet at time and sometime shot on glass and developed on location. It is an amazing body of work ,worth taking the time to look at and even collect.
