We Are Change Catalysts

At left is a photo of me receiving the NWONE Transformational Pioneer in Nursing Award for 2011.

Flash forward a few...make that several...years. When I am sitting with my feet up at the Old Nurses Home, I will likely reminisce about 2011 and cackle "What a year for healthcare! What a year for nursing!"

We are in the midst of mighty political struggles to redefine our country's responsibility (or lack thereof) for the health of our citizens, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, and emerging prominence of patient and family care direction, along with reliance on evidenced-based practice for healthcare providers. From the heart of budget struggles and Medicare and social security debates, demonstration projects offer significant hope for health promotion as a cost savings, rather than relying on episodic illness treatment and emergency department visits as primary care.

As our nation deliberates about how to provide just, fair healthcare for our citizens, as international currencies and governmental upheavals affect policy decisions, the resulting chaos provides new opportunities for honesty and transparency en route to improved public health. New voices can now be heard in conversations to create a better future, and the discipline of nursing emerges as the body of knowledge necessary to create meaningful change.

  • Who else understands the practical realities patients and families endure throughout each episode of care?
  • Who else provides public health education and treatment for rural and urban communities, from ambulatory care, home health, critical care and emergency medicine, and long-term care and rehabilitation?
  • Who else cares for people in their life's journeys through prenatal and newborn to hospice?

Registered Nurses. The most trusted profession.

As promised, we approach the sad "secret" of omitted care with transparency and an action-oriented approach.

Our article opens with identifying the research about missed care, the reasons for it, delegation and teamwork, and the value of a shared mental model with recommendations for improvement.   Visit JONA online or contact us for more information on this quality focus column. More detail is forthcoming in our poster presentation at AONE in Boston, March 21-24, 2012.
