                CAFETERIA DUTY

Back in the "old" days, kids were required/expected to periodically help in the school cafeteria.  Unlike today, complete meals were prepared onsite in a full kitchen, staffed with kitchen workers.  I guess to offset costs, kids were enlisted to help out in the cafeteria a few times throughout the school year.  I'm not sure if that was the system across the country, but it was common practice in Hawa
ii.

I fondly remember helping to make laulau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laulau).  I guess I was good at it, since I was picked to help make them on more than one occasion.
I really preferred making the cookies and desserts as opposed to sweeping and cleaning.  Most of us kids did not seem to mind working in the cafeteria as it took us out of class!

Here is what I now realize I learned:
*how to follow instructions
*teamwork
*taking responsibility for your actions(& screw ups too)
*being accountable
*respect for your superiors and elders
*follow through

Wow - all that from working in the cafeteria!
