DAYS OF MY YOUTH - Growing up on Kauai
Myron Kashima
 Tribute to my parents
I was so re-miss in not honoring my mom in last month's story for Mother's Day. Mom survived having us six kids run her crazy! I remember going to work with mom when she worked at a hotel, helping her fix beds and clean the rooms. We were extremely proud of her when she went got her degree while working nights too. Thanks mom, for all you've done for us.
So for Father's Day, I wanted to make sure I didn't forget my dad. He worked ALL the time, often 2-3 jobs. I remember "helping" him on one of his construction jobs....he was busy doing something and I was up on a scaffold dropping his chisels trying to kill some mice running around on the ground. I wasn't always such a good helper as you can imagine.
I have fond memories of the times when he would mow lawns for people and mom would pack a picnic lunch and us kids would play nearby at the beach waiting for him to finish his job.
He did construction, landscaping, fishing, farming, metal work - you name it. I'm still amazed at the solar heating system he built out of copper tubing encased in a wooden frame painted black and covered with glass.
I watched and learned and somehow along the way, the most important lesson I learned was to take care of your family even if it meant long hours and hard work.
Thanks mom and dad for your hard work and sacrifice to take care of our family ~~Myron
