DAYS OF MY YOUTH  - Growing up on Kauai

The REAL "Descendents"

In the movie - the "Descendents", George Clooney's character shows his kids what the family property looks like that was passed down from their missionary ancestors.  This shot in the movie is actually of "Kipu Kai" the Waterhouse estate on Kauai.  This is a VERY private estate - entry exclusively for the family or by invitation only.
Just seeing this shot of the Kipu Kai brought back a flood of childhood memories....

My friends' father took care of the cattle that the Waterhouse family raised.  A couple of times, I went over to Miles' house to "hang out".  We had fun riding horses on the beach -  I wasn't used to the incredible strength and power of the horses, but for Miles, it was a way of life.  Guns were used at the ranch to protect the cattle and when I was there, we set up cans for target practice on the fence for fun.  Being on a ranch was a different world than plantation camp life.

In hindsight, I didn't realize what a privilege I had to even be there on that property.  I was able to see beautiful peacocks that freely roamed the land, saw near-extinct Hawaiian nene geese that were raised there and played and rode horses on the pristine, white sand beach.

What seemed like just a simple act of "hanging out at a friends' house", was something I will never experience again.

Aloha -  Myron

HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE MONTH
Here's a few words that are similar in spelling but have different meanings:

Piko - "pee koh":  belly button
Puka - "poo kah": Hole
baban
Poke - "poh keh":  the word means pieces but is often a reference to a Hawaiian appetizer, usually raw fish served with seasoning
