Nature's sweet treat - Natural Sugar Cane

The sugar cane crops were harvested around this time of the year.  As a kid growing up on a sugar plantation, everyone's lives revolved around sugar.

Our old "stomping grounds" were often following the dusty,  red dirt roads through the cane fields to our adventure for that given day.  It may have been hiking to go fishing in the reservoir in field 26 or 39 that had the best large mouth bass ever or just hiking into Kilohana Crater.  We would be out for hours, with little more than our trusty pocket knife so we could cut fresh fruit when we were hungry or oftentimes, would cut a cane stalk to chew on and sucked on the sweet sugary "juice" and then spit out the pulp.  I can still remember the wonderful taste of REAL natural sugar that no processed or even raw sugar can compare to.  I dare say that if you've never chewed a sugar cane stalk, you have no idea what sugar really tastes like!  It occurred to me that only "sugar plantation" people can truly relate to what I'm talking about because I'm sure they all chewed raw cane stalks too.

Yup, the adventures and memories were made sweeter chewing sugar cane!

Aloha and Mahalo for your patronage over these past nine years!  It has been an honor and a privilege serving you!                                                Myron
HAIKU FARMS MINUTE (Monthly update on the rebirth of our family farm on Kauai) shack

We've had many weeks of heavy rain so it's delayed our plans to plant more papaya trees.

We're doing our best to keep up - everything is subject to
Mother Nature.

More news next month. - Clarice

Chance'Um
Take A chance!

When we were trying to decide about whether we should open the restaurant or not, we analyzed and analyzed and finally we just decided to "chance'um" - we would never know the outcome unless we actually took the step.
We're so glad we did!
