HAWAIIAN NEW YEAR'S CELEBRATION

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou - Happy New Year.

The western Christmas and New Year fell during this same time of the year that the Hawaiians traditionally honored the earth for giving them plenty to eat. This period of resting and feasting was called Makahiki (mah-kah-HEE- kee). It lasted for 4 months, and no wars or conflicts were allowed during this time. Because makahiki also means "year", the Hawaiian phrase for "Happy New Year" became "Hau'oli (happy) Makahiki (year) Hou (new)"(how-OH-lee mah-kah-hee-kee ho).

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
baban

It seems that as we grow older, we dismiss the power of setting goals..i.e. New Year's Resolutions.  Why? Is it because we have not succeeded in the past with resolutions like - losing weight, learning to play a musical instrument or learning a new language? Whatever the reason, I personally don't think resolutions are a waste of time.

When I was younger, I can remember making a resolution to earn my next belt in martial arts within six months. Although I was not successful, I learned discipline, focus and dedication - lessons I have had to use throughout my life.  As this new year arrives, so does the promise(s) of new beginnings.  GO FOR IT!

Someone once said "one day your life will flash before your eyes.  Make sure it's worth watching."

HAIKU FARMS MINUTE (Monthly update on the rebirth of our family farm on Kauai) shack

Mystery solved!  Remember the mystery animal that's been eating the ti leaf plants?  We thought it was a goat or a cow....nope - it's a BIG wild pig.  It's so big, it's eating the TOPS of the plants
Yikes!  We're still trying to catch it - there's more than one and they come out at night.

More news next month. - Clarice
