DAYS OF MY YOUTH ON KAUAI - MYRON KASHIMA

 THE ROCK -   Maha`ulepu

One of the jobs I had working on the sugar plantation was to bundle seed cane.  One day, my luna, or supervisor took me out to the boonies and dropped me off near a huge boulder that was sitting in the middle of the cane fields near Maha'ulepu.

Before he left, he told me the legend of this rock.  Many years before, workers tried to remove the rock from the field.  They used a D9 Cat and it wouldn't budge. They tried to dynamite it and it didn't break.  Apparently, this was no ordinary rock.  The rock bears ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs and is "kapu"= sacred.

His word of warning - "Don't pee on the rock!"  Sound stupid?  Not to Joe - It seems that he didn't believe the legend and pee'd on it. He ended up in the hospital with kidney problems.  He was VERY serious about this rock.

The rock is still there to this day - in the middle of the old cane fields.

His story about the rock was just one of several "spooky" stories about this area.  Maha`ulepu is covered with places marked with
ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs and rare birds and species. The beauty and mystery of Maha'ulepu is unsurpassed!  Check out this link for more info:

  Aloha, Myron

HAIKU FARMS MINUTE
(Monthly update on the rebirth of our
family farm on Kauai)

Nothing new to report.  Just doing the daily upkeep.  Luau leaves were moved to the third farm and are doing well.  Ti leaves were started on the third farm too.  Animals still damaging plants at first farm.  Can't catch'um, we find the damage the next day.  Too many hours of not being there is the problem.  Not enough food in the forest to feed wild pigs.   We started selling ti-leaves again to halau's and laulau makers - dad is able to help bundle the ti-leaves.

More news next month - Clarice

        THE CURSE OF PELE

Hawaiian legend says that anyone who removes a piece of volcanic rock from the Hawaiian Islands will incur the wrath of Pele. The Hawaiian volcano god, Pele, is a jealous god, and is very protective of her children. Being a volcanic god, her kids are the rocks that come from molten magma cooling off, and she wants them to stick around.

Taking a small volcanic rock home may not seem like much of a big deal-until the curse settles in. Many vistiors returning rocks report all manner of bad luck striking them; the death of family pets, the loss of a job, a sudden illness- all of it and more are linked back to a belief that the act of taking a rock from Hawaii is bad mojo. This is the legend behind the superstition, and the reason why people who believe it are willing to send rocks back to the Islands, at times personally returning the stolen rocks as an act of redemption.

Is it true? Some say that this legend is a result of modern Hawaiian park rangers; those stalwart protectors of nature, who grew tired of seeing visitors making off with the local landscape. Sure, a small rock or a bottle of sand from a beach is no big deal...unless of course a million people, annually, walk off with the same souvenir!
