IT'S OUR 8TH ANNIVERSARY!

It's so hard to believe we've been serving the Bay Area since 2003!  Mahalo for your continued patronage and kind support throughout the years!  Thank you for allowing us to bring you great food and share the aloha spirit and our love for Hawaii.

Last month, we mentioned that we were looking at updating our menu and reviewing our prices since we haven't raised prices in over three years.  We realize this economy has been challenging for our customers as well and by making some in house changes, we are we were able to keep many of the increases to under a quarter.  We remain committed to bringing you good value for your hard earned money.

Check out our menu changes including our new combos for our sandwich and burgers to include fries or a scoop of potato salad and we've also added a couple of new items.  Our new menu should be up on the website in about a week.

Kilohana is "going green" and we're using "real" plates and utensils for the dine in meals.  This change has enabled us to reduce our dining room trash by about 90%!

Hope you are all well - Malama Pono - Take care,

DAYS OF MY YOUTH - MYRON KASHIMA

My  old
fishing buddy...

I've loved fishing since I was probably 8 or 10 years old.

Most of the time I would go with my dad but

sometimes, his friend, Tino would ask if I wanted to go with him.

On one occasion, Tino and I went out late one night to fish off the Mahaulepu cliffs.   We parked at the top of the cliff and cast about 30 feet down to the ocean  (We were at the top of the cliff on the far right side in the picture above).  We fished throughout the night and caught a few weke and moi.

Early in the morning,
the cow bell on my fishing line started ringing like crazy and I ran to my pole.  I couldn't understand why Tino started telling me to cut the line.  "Cut the line? No way, I'm going to bring this home!"  Cut the line! - he said, it's a manta ray. I looked down and there was a HUGE shadow in the water!  It was the size of a CAR!  I was so excited and I was determined to catch this thing!! I wouldn't listen so Tino calmly walked up to my pole and cut the line!  Darn - this was the biggest thing I had ever seen!

I last saw Tino at the Grove Far
m Plantation  reunion several years ago.  It was about 30 years since we last saw each other.Tino looked at me and said - "there's my old fishing buddy!"  It was amazing that we instantly recognized each other!  Think about it - he's now over 80 and I'm almost 60.

Just reminicing about those times takes me back to
being a young kid again and how fortunate I was to have a fishing buddy like Tino....

SMALL KID TIME OR HANABADDAH DAYS

(pronounced "hah nah bah dah")

Small kid time refers to the times/experiences when you were a child.  Hanabaddah really means nose snot or boogers - Like when you were a snot-nosed kid.  These two terms are interchangeable.

Every month, Myron shares his "small kid time" stories or  stories about his "hanabaddah" days.

BEAUTIFUL HAWAIIAN LEI'S

How to Make a Lei

Girl making a lei

The Hawaiian Craft of Lei Making

In Hawaii, whenever there is a big occasion like a graduation or wedding, it is common for family and friends to get together and string leis for the event. Lei making is a wonderful time for sharing stories and getting to know one another better. It can also be a particularly fun Hawaiian craft activity for kids' birthday parties or other gatherings.

Make Your Own Leis

You can make your own leis from materials found right in your back yard! Literally any flowers, leaves, ferns, etc., may be used to make a lei. For your first time however, you should start with the basic single strand flower lei.

To begin lei making, collect any medium sized flowers you can find - roses, daisies, carnations etc. You'll need about 50 blossoms to make a 40" single strand lei. Cut about a 100" length cotton string, and fold it in half. Tie a large knot at the end of the twine - this will act like a "stopper" for your flowers as you string them. Remember to leave extra string below the knot - you will use this to tie the lei together upon its completion.

Lei making kit

In Hawaii, a steel lei needle, usually about 12 to 18 inches in length is used to string flowers, but any large needle will do. Go through the center of the face of the flower straight through to the back. Carefully guide the flowers to the base of the string near the knot - never force the flowers, you can always move them farther down later. You are finished when the lei is approximately 40" long. You may choose to dress your lei up with a ribbon, or just leave it au natural.
