                                Merry Christmas!

We have come to the best time of the year!  How great it is that we can celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and share this wonderful time with our families and friends.

We have a lot to offer you this month to help
with your Christmas shopping.

We have a special December only promotion:  Buy a $25 gift certificate and pay only $20.  What a bargain!   Take advantage of our ongoing special price for our Kilohana Teriyaki Glaze - buy a case and get a 10% discount.

We have lots of items under $10 for teacher's gifts, grab bags or...put an assortment together for a unique gift bag or basket.  We'll have some items pre-wrapped for your convenience.

If you need some help with your holiday cooking - PLACE YOUR PARTY TRAY ORDERS EARLY.  We close on Christmas day but most items can be picked up the day before and we give you easy reheating instructions.  Don't forget to order some of our great  potato salad - let us take care of that for you!  Think Kilohana for your Christmas potluck or office parties too.

Please note that Kilohana will be closing early on Friday, December 24 at 2:00 and will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25th, same schedule for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Hope you are all well - Malama Pono - Take care,

DAYS OF MY YOUTH - Myron Kashima
Come over for leftovers!

pig2

We got a text from my family on Kauai to come get leftover kalua pig from Thanksgiving along with this picture.

They had raised two baby pigs over two years that grew to between 150 - 200 pounds.  The work started a couple of days in advance to dig the imu (oven), gather all the materials such as rocks, banana stumps, ti leaves, etc.  The pig was prepared the day before Thanksgiving.

Fortunately, my brother has a backhoe.  This enabled them to dig the imu with ease as well as hoist the pig for easier dressing.

We thought you would be interested to see our family farm "in action".

Have a great holiday season!

POINT OF INTEREST:  SNOW IN HAWAII

It snows in Hawaii only at the very summits of our 3 tallest volcanoes (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala). The snow level almost never gets below 9000 feet in Hawaii during the winter, but since these mountains are taller than 13,000 feet, 13,000 feet, and 10,000 feet, respectively, they get dusted with snow a few times a year. It rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days though.
Although the rest of the island chain enjoys warm tropical weather the entire year-round, there have been "freak" cold storms a few times this century that have brought local snow storms down to as low as 3000 to 4000 feet. This snow has melted very quickly, however.

PIDGIN CORNER - LEARN SOME LOCAL "SLANG"

Rubbah slippah

Translation:  Rubber slippers or flip flops

It is customary when you go into someone's home in Hawaii, that you remove your shoes or rubbah slippahs before entering.  At holiday time - there will be dozens of pairs of them on the porch or doorstep.  Don't wear your best shoes or slippahs - there is a chance someone leaving early will "mistake" your new slippahs for theirs!

By the way - NEVER call your rubbah slippahs flip flops - big sign you're a tourist!
