Kilohana Trivia
Hawaiian Style Chili!
Thursday's we feature our special Hawaiian Style Chili. We use premium angus ground beef, beans, and diced portuguese sausage and other seasonings to tantalize your taste buds.
We don't do a huge volume since we only serve it one day of the week but we serve approximately a hundred gallons of chili a year! Get a plate lunch, bowl or take home a large chili and add it to a hot dog, burger, or make your own "taco" type salad.

Aloha Festival - Hawaii
If you are lucky enough to be in Hawaii the week of September 18 - 25th, take in all the festivities of the Aloha Festival held in Waikiki. The magnificent floats and horseback riders are a beautiful sight to see!
I recently came back from Hawaii. I went to celebrate my mom's 88th birthday. We had a great time and my Waikiki beach boy brother Oku took us all canoe riding the day I left, mom included. We had a blast! Try it next time you're over there! September is another busy month with all the kids going back to school. The weather will start to change as we start the new season that takes us to the end of another year. It will be Christmas before we know it - yikes!
Hope you are all well - Malama Pono - Take care,Pam and Myron Kashima and all of the staff at Kilohana Grill

DAYS OF MY YOUTH - MYRON KASHIMA
HOME SWEET HOME
I grew up on a sugar plantation on Kauai. Back then, housing was available to the workers of the plantation. The homes were usually very small by today's standards. We lived in a tiny three bedroom house that was around 700 sq. feet. The entire house was about the size of our restaurant. In addition to the three bedrooms, there was a small kitchen and eating area and living room. The roof was made of corrugated iron. and I still remember the sound of the rain when it hit the roof.
There were eight in the family, two kids in each bedroom and the youngest two shared the bedroom with mom and dad. We had an "outhouse" and a "furo" or bath house that was also separate from the main house. I hated to go out there when it was dark and rainy.
Although it was small and sparse, we were happy to have a house to live in. Dad worked very hard for the plantation and usually worked two other jobs part-time at night and on the weekends. Mom worked too and went to night school. I don't know how they did it! We didn't have much money but there was a lot of love. We didn't have store bought toys but we always had a lot of toys we made on our own and games we made up playing tag in the forest and swimming in Huleia river.
It sure was a different time back then. No TV, fax machines and cell phones. In hindsight, we were lucky to run around and just be kids. Too bad you have to be "on vacation" to get away from all the modern technology. Our kids grow up too fast in this day and age, what a shame they've missed out playing mud pies, shooting marbles and getting dirty.
Aloha, Myron

PLACES OF INTEREST: ISLAND OF LANAI
You won't find a single traffic light here and that's exactly how the people of Lanai like it. Only nine miles from Maui yet a world away, Lanai can feel like two places. The first is found in luxurious resorts where visitors can indulge in world-class amenities and championship-level golf at The Challenge at Manele and The Experience at Koele. The other is found bouncing along the island's rugged back-roads in a 4-wheel drive exploring off the beaten path treasures like Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) and Polihua Beach. In fact, only 30 miles of Lanai's roads are paved.
The smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lanai offers big
enticements to its visitors. From the stunning views atop the pine-lined
Munro Trail to watching the acrobatic spinner dolphins from romantic Hulopoe Bay,
Lanai is a special place where you're sure to find serenity, adventure
and intimacy. If you want to get away from it all, get away to Lanai.
