POINT OF INTEREST: SNOW IN HAWAII
It snows in Hawaii only at the
very summits of our 3 tallest volcanoes (Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and
Haleakala). The snow level almost never gets below 9000 feet in
Hawaii during the winter, but since these mountains are taller than
13,000 feet, 13,000 feet, and 10,000 feet, respectively, they
get dusted with snow a few times a year. It rarely stays on the
ground for more than a few days though.
Although the rest of the island chain enjoys warm tropical
weather the entire year-round, there have been "freak" cold
storms a few times this century that have brought local snow
storms down to as low as 3000 to 4000 feet. This snow has melted
very quickly, however. http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/ASK/hawaii-snow.html

DAYS OF MY YOUTH - MYRON KASHIMA
Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree...When we were growing up, the Christmas trees from the mainland were shipped over by boat and usually arrived in Hawaii dry and the needles were usually already falling off. They were expensive too and we really couldn't afford them anyway.
So instead, we used to get our trees from Grove Farm Plantation. The plantation issued permits which would allow us to cut down one tree per family that we could take home. We used to decorate them with icicles that contained lead. Who knew back then they were toxic.
We didn't have internet shopping - we had Puhi General Store or we used
to dream about the wonderful things in the Sears Wish book catalog. I remember wanting a shiny new bike and a beebee gun.
And although we used to sing about "dashing through the snow" and we used to cut out snowflakes and draw snowmen in school, we had no clue what snow was really like. Only the kids on Maui and the Big Island had snow at the tops of the volcanoes. The rest of the island kids only saw the snow in the movies or on TV.
So, until next month, enjoy this special time with your family and friends. - Aloha, Myron
