Aloha Everyone!

Another month has come and gone - I can't believe it's August already.  Hope your summer is going great.

The big Hawaiian event this month is the Aloha Festival in San Francisco.  If you can make it, head on down to the Presidio on August 1 and 2.  They always have great music, food and island craft vendors and the best part is, admission is FREE.  Go to:  http://www.pica-org.org/AlohaFest/ for more info.

And don't forget, when you're in our area, please come on in.  If you haven't been in in awhile. check out our great sandwich/burger menu.

Malama Pono - Take care,

RECIPE OF THE MONTH - PINEAPPLE SQUARES

2 c sugar
4 eggs. beaten
1-1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 20 oz can crushed pineapple, drained
1 c nuts, chopped
Powdered sugar for topping

Cream butter and sugar, stir in eggs.  Sift flour and baking soda, gradually add to creamed mixture, add pineapple and nuts.  Bake at 350 deg for 30-40 minutes.  Sprinkle sifted powdered sugar over warm cake.
DAYS OF MY YOUTH - MYRON KASHIMA

KANIKAPILA - means to play music together in Hawaiian

My mother is the youngest of 12 and represents the Hawaiian/Chinese side of my family.  As you can imagine, it was always "kanikapila" time - or some party going on every weekend at someone's house.  I remember my Uncle Raymond playing slack key guitar, Uncle Alan played a homemade bass made out of a washtub or "plangana", a broom stick and cord.
E
veryone brought their own instruments - ukulele's, guitars -  food and of course one or two cases of PRIMO beer.

My uncles could SING!  I swear their music could have been on a record album if they had chosen to become professional musicians. Uncle Alan was a member of a trio called "1,000 POUNDS OF MUSIC".

I also remember that the aunties were always cooking and there were kids running around EVERYWHERE.  We had so much fun  with all our cousins, young and old.

My mom is now the lone surviving child and our cousins are spread everywhere so I don't see them much anymore.

I miss those good old days - when there was plenty of music, plenty of food and plenty of love all around (and of course, we got whacked a few times when we got into trouble).
POINT OF INTEREST - IOLANI PALACE, OAHU
IOLANI PALACE
A Hawaiian national treasure and the only official state residence of royalty in the United States, `Iolani Palace was the official residence of the Hawaiian Kingdom's last two Monarchs-
-King Kalakaua, who built the Palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Lili`uokalani.

The next time you are on Oahu, please take some time to visit the Iolani Palace.  You will see the beauty and elegance of days gone by when there were Kings and Queens that ruled Hawaii.

PIDGIN CORNER - LEARN SOME LOCAL "SLANG"

Hammajang - means messed up

Dude, my surfboard is hammajang - (messed up) after the last big wave.
HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE MONTH
KUMU  (koo-moo)  Most common definition - Teacher
Kumu Hula is a hula teacher

We live in an area where there are many hula clubs or "halaus" and they are usually led by a Kumu Hula.  Check out http://home.netcom.com/~halkop/halau.html for a listing of the hula clubs in the Bay Area.  Dancing hula is only one aspect of being part of a halau.  They will welcome you in and share the Hawaiian culture and you will become part of their ohana or family.  No experience necessary, they have classes for young and old.
I hope you enjoyed our newsletter.  I welcome your feedback and you can unsubscribe at anytime.  Until next month.....

A hui hou - until we meet again

Aloha,
PAM KASHIMA
