Scott Shearer: What's In Store for Agriculture in the 112th Congress?

While a change of the majority in the House along with a new speaker has put a different face on the 112th Congress, the impact it might ultimately have for agriculture could emerge from subtler factors. Bockorny Group Vice President Scott Shearer described the last general election as historic with its huge turnover of legislators - 96 freshmen representatives were sworn into the House and 16 to the Senate. But just because many of the new legislators are Republicans from agricultural states, agribusiness shouldn't be looking for automatic guarantees or favorable legislation to come its way. For one thing, redistricting in many states has resulted in representation of agriculture districts by lawmakers with no direct connection to farming, ranching and food animal production. There are 23 new members on the House Ag Committee, and 60% of the current committee did not serve during the 2008 Farm Bill discussion.

Save the Date: March 15th, Ag Day
The U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (USFRA), established to counter the negative publicity about agriculture and food animal production appearing in much of the country's media, will help Council members mark Ag Day 2011 at the March 15 Meeting and Luncheon at the American Royal. Featured speaker Hugh Whaley, General Manager of USFRA will outline how the organization, which represents more than 20 of the largest and best-funded farm groups, is projecting a positive image of agriculture and enhancing public trust in the U.S. food supply.
Two key objectives of the Alliance is to maintain the freedom of U.S. farmers and ranchers to operate in a responsible manner and to increase their voice as authorities on local, state and national issues concerning animal and crop agriculture. The U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance is also working with health, environmental and dietary organizations to demonstrate the benefits of today's agriculture production.
The monthly meeting starts at 11:30 and lunch will be served at noon. Cost is $30 for members and $50 for non-members. Council members will receive further information about the event and registration instructions by email.

SHB Seminar Covers Food Safety and Waste Management Reimbursements
During Shook, Hardy & Bacon's annual Agriculture Legal Update luncheon last month, Sarah Sunday, Senior Food Law Counsel for Kraft Foods, Inc., noted the FDA Food Modernization Act signed into law on January 4, 2011 was the first real update in food safety legislation since the 1930s. But she said there was nothing radical in the new law even though it would usher in a new era of FDA food safety regulation. She explained that most of the industry was already in compliance with the rules and regulations.
