A Call to Action:

10 New ACUPCC Signatories by 10/10/10

Dear President,

On October 10th, 2010 - "10/10/10" - thousands of groups around the world are joining the "Global Work Party" to find real-world solutions to address the climate crisis and send a strong message to the leaders that if people can get to work, so can they.

Recognizing the pivotal role higher education has always played in catalyzing positive change in the society, the United Negro College Fund and Second Nature invite you to leverage your leadership to address the climate challenge, and contribute to this symbolic global day of action, by joining the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) before 10/10/10. To do so, please sign the enclosed Commitment document and send it to the address provided.

Our goal is to engage 10 new minority-serving institutions in the ACUPCC network by 10/10/10 and celebrate that success. As the president of an institution that educates students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds to become responsible citizens, your participation is critical.  Without equal representation and a diverse coalition, our society will not be able to create the change needed to ensure a safe, livable future for all.

To date, 674 presidents and chancellors have joined together, committing to 1) create a plan to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions on their own time-line; 2) take at least two tangible actions in the short-term; 3) promote education, research and community engagement on the topic; and 4) publicly report on progress.  The Commitment is flexible and not prescriptive - each institution takes their own approach, ensuring that decisions are feasible, cost-effective and right for its circumstances. ACUPCC institutions have realized significant benefits, including attracting funding, cost-savings, and a renewed sense of purpose and excitement across campus.  The ACUPCC provides the space for the signatories to collaborate, share their experiences and learn from each other as they face these challenges.

Climate disruption is a massive, complex challenge, which no one school can overcome on its own.  Joining this collective initiative of the higher education sector is the most effective and beneficial step you can take to contribute to the national efforts to address the climate challenge.

The United Negro College Fund and Second Nature, would like to thank you for your leadership on this important issue, and consideration of joining signing the ACUPCC before 10/10/10.  If you have any questions, please contact us at acupcc@secondnature.org.

Sincerely,
