Rallying Around Redevelopment
The proposal to dissolve redevelopment agencies (RDA)  in California would have terrible ramifications in Santa Cruz County if adopted.

Most of the economic development work in the County is done by RDAs, from key-site infrastructure improvements to recruitment.  Competition to attract private-sector investment from retailers and manufacturing to real estate improvements is intense.

Our cities and the County have been proactive in their use of RDA resources. Recovery from the 1989 earthquake in both Santa Cruz and Watsonville would have been on a much smaller scale without RDA. The development of the Manabe-Ow industrial park in Watsonville would be improbable. The Tannery Arts project and the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Center would not be underway; and the investment in additional security and retail development in downtown Santa Cruz would be beyond the City's means.

The Chamber is advocating for protection of the Redevelopment system. We encourage you to contact your assembly member and senator to express your  opposition to the dissolution of the critical local economic resources.

These include not only the technology and ag businesses themselves but also the broad array of other businesses providing the goods and services necessary to sustain this emerging industry sector.
