As I See It...

Under 21

I received a telephone call from a local high school student a couple of weeks ago. He was very pleasant and asked if he and his fellow students could visit our store as part of a project he and his friends were working on.

He told me his project was to come into area liquor stores and sticker products with a "Don't buy for persons under 21" message.

I told him I would like to see the stickers and direct the placement of them, but other than that I'm onboard.

He paused for a moment, very surprised that he had received a positive response from a liquor store operator; then he couldn't thank me enough. He went on to explain the heavy resistance he and his friends had been running into and how it was either total rudeness or fear of losing customers.

I explained to him that as a municipal operation it was part of our purpose to control the sale of alcohol in our community and why wouldn't I embrace a project where young adults get the word out to my customer base that it is illegal to provide beverage alcohol to persons under 21 years of age. From my point of view it was a rare opportunity to positively educate my customers and contribute in some small way to the development of our future community leaders.

A few days later I hosted seven students and their teacher at my store. They spent a half hour placing stickers and fielding questions from my customers and my staff. It couldn't have gone any better. The students were excited and the customers were impressed with the kids. I will be making this an annual event going forward and will be communicating the happenings to my city council and the local press.

It was a rewarding experience that will promote my stores value to the community.

Have a great Memorial Weekend!

A Man Walks Into a Bar...

Bar Photo

A man walks into a bar and orders a beer.

He takes a sip and then tosses the rest into the bartender's face.

"I'm sorry!" the man sobs. "I can't help doing that. It's so embarrassing!"

The bartender feels bad for the guy and gets him to agree to see a psychiatrist. Six months later, the man comes back.

"Are you seeing a psychiatrist?" the bartender asks, while handing the man a beer.

"Yes, twice a week. He's great." says the man, as he throws the beer into the bartender's face.

"Great?! You just threw another beer into my face!" yells the bartender.

"True." says the man, "But now it doesn't embarrass me."

Westbound Liquor Bonds Paid Off Early
Money Bags

By Joni Astrup, Star News

Bonds sold by the city of Elk River to finance construction of the city-owned Westbound Liquor store at 13484 185th St. are being paid off early.

The move will save the city $41,737 in interest.

The city had authorized the $1.2 million bond sale in 2005. The bonds have a final maturity of Feb. 1, 2015, and an interest rate of 4.5 percent.

The amount needed to pay the bonds off early on July 1, 2012, is $570,000 plus accrued interest. The money will come from liquor store profits. The city owns Westbound and Northbound stores. Northbound has been in business for years.

Dave Potvin, manager of the city's liquor operations, told the Elk River City Council on Monday, May 7, that the addition of Westbound has worked out well.

"Ninety percent of Westbound's business is new business," Potvin said. "Northbound has largely been unaffected."

With the bonds being paid off in 2012, there is no debt on either building, he said.

Mayor John Dietz told Potvin and Assistant Operations Manager Steve Tillmann that they "run a top-shelf operation."
