As I See It....

It's time to make the most out of your membership!  There are two important upcoming events, MMBA/MLBA Legislative Day and Boot Camp.

Legislative Day is January 31.  This is your opportunity to go to the Capitol and let your local legislators know about important issues regarding municipal liquor operations.  They can't help you if they don't know what is important.  Putting a face to your operation is also helpful so when you contact them in the future, they remember you.

Boot Camp is February 22-23 at Breezy Point.  No matter if you are new to municipal liquor operations or have been in the business for 20 years, this is a great opportunity to get new ideas to improve your store.  You will have the opportunity to meet with fellow managers and share what's working and what's not.  You will leave energized and full of new ideas for your store.

Information on both of these events can be found in this newsletter.

I hope to see you at both events!

Bemidji Liquor has Fantastic Year
 Paul & Babe

The following was written by Bemidji finance director Ron Eichens.

It was included in the city newletter and sent to city council press, employees and other organizations...

Liquor store profits contribute $275,000 annually to subsidize the general fund budget and property tax levy.

If liquor store profits were not available the city would need to increase property taxes by 7% to generate the same funding.

Although we are finalizing 2010 financial results, the liquor store had another fantastic year.  Sales were up but more importantly gross profit margins increased over 2%.

In addition, the change in credit card processing firms approved earlier this year is saving approximately $600 a month in credit card fees.

Hats off and kudos to the liquor store employees for their hard work!

A Man is in Bed with his Wife when there is a Knock on his Front Door....

Sleeping
A man is in bed with his wife when there is a knock on his front door. He rolls over and looks at his clock, and it's half past three in the morning.

"I'm not getting out of bed at this hour," he thinks, and rolls over.

Then, a louder knock follows.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed and goes downstairs. He opens the door and there is man standing at the door.  It didn't take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk.

"Hi there," slurs the stranger. "Can you give me a push??"

"No, get lost. It's half past three. I was in bed," says the man and slams the door.

He goes back up to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says, "That wasn't very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby sitter and you had to knock on that man's house to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost?"

"But the guy was drunk," says the husband.

"It doesn't matter," says the wife. "He needs our help and it would be the right thing to do to help him."

So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs. He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, "Hey, do you still want a push??"

And he hears a voice cry out, "Yes please."

So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, "Where are you?"
And the stranger replies, "I'm over here, on your swing"
