As I See It...
Communication is a must in our business.
Whether you are communicating with the public, your patrons or your council it is very important to get your message out.
The public needs to be made aware of upcoming events, weekly activities and specials.
Advertising in your local shopper or newspaper can get the message out to the public, posters and flyers can get the message out to your patrons, and banners can announce your specials.
We make a monthly calendar with our weekly specials and events for our customers to take. We also post it in the bathrooms and the bulletin board in the entry. Getting the word out early on upcoming events works well for us and makes planning for our customers easier.
Staying in touch with your council helps keep them in the loop with what you are doing. I contribute an article to the city newsletter and submit an update of upcoming events and any news at the monthly council meeting.
We also have a web site.
So get the word out there and let people know what you have to offer them.

How Do Your End Caps Look? |
End cap displays should grab the customer's attention and sell merchandise.
An end cap should sell as much merchandise at 50 percent of one side of the adjoining counter. |
Idea of the Week |
With the upcoming baseball playoffs and football games, on-sale operations can use unique BINGO / BARGO cards to create excitment in their facility. (Techincally, the word BINGO can't be used unless it is a regualr BINGO game - so BARGO is often used.)
Baseball and football bingo is a lot like regular bingo. Players get cards and the goal is to be the first to check off five in a row. The difference is that every square is a type of play, so players get to check off squares as events occur on the field.

Good Job Sherry Karlsen!!! |
The following is a recent note sent by Brooklyn Center Liquor manager Tom Agnes to his employees.....
We had an incident today I thought I should bring to everyone's attention.
A man came in this afternoon intoxicated, and the sale was refused.
Another man came in and bought product who was fine.
An officer came in soon afterward and questioned the employee about the two sales.
As it turns out, the second man was a cabbie for the first and the officer cited the cabbie for supplying the intoxicated man.
Our employee did the right thing by refusing service. Had she not, she very well may have been cited by the officer.
Good job Sherry!!

Alcohol Beverages Expected To Do Well This Holiday Season |
Beverage News Daily October 1, 2009 Alcohol beverages are expected to do well this holiday season, even as American consumers remain skittish about spending their money. That's the conclusion of a new study, just released by Nielsen Co. Households continue to focus on "essential gift giving" such as staple consumables, candy, beverage/alcohol and entertaining at home, and 86 percent said that they expect to spend the same or less this year than last - with a 7% increase in those indicating they would spend less. Overall, Nielsen is projecting that holiday sales will rise 0.03 percent this year, accounting for $90 billion in dollar sales. "Given everything the consumer has absorbed over the past 12 to 18 months, the fact that we expect this coming holiday season to be flat in dollars can be viewed as a modest positive," said James Russo, Vice President, Global Consumer Insights. "Americans have undergone a fundamental change in how they spend their money, and the days of stretching finances to make purchases not deemed as necessary are over, at least for the time being. That said, our research has shown that consumers are looking forward to loosening their purse strings a bit, but only once they feel more confident about the state of the economy and their personal financial situation."

Hunting & Fishing Licenses |
 |
An MMBA member recently asked if If an exclusive (off-sale) liquor store does NOT receive a fee / commission, can they sell Minnesota hunting and fishing licenses as a service?
According to Alcohol & Gambling Enforcement, this practice is not allowed.
