The Road to Meaningful Use
HealthInsight is proud to announce that the Regional Extension Center consistently exceeded the goals of the Office of the National Coordinator in assisting you and your colleagues in EHR adoption and Meaningful Use. Our programs in both states are fully enrolled, with nearly half of you using certified EHR systems to send electronic prescriptions and generate quality reports. Eight percent of you have already attested to Stage 1 Meaningful Use! Congratulations to all of the REC participants who are continuing to take strides to improve the quality of care for their patients.

Roadblocks to Registering for Meaningful Use Attestation
Many providers have spent countless hours on the phone with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services customer service agents because they were unable to attest to Meaningful Use. Many times the unsuccessful attestation is because of improper registration of the provider and/or group.
To avoid delays, make sure that you register for Meaningful Use attestation well in advance of the 90-day reporting period. This will ensure that any issues with NPI, PECOS, or group information are corrected before you are ready to attest. Waiting to register can significanlty delay your incentive payments.
For more about the possible registration errors that can delay your incentive payment and how to avoid them, read on. |

Provider Spotlight
Dr. Keith Boman, a native of Southern Nevada and well-known Las Vegas cardiologist, began the move from paper records to the Meaningful Use of an integrated EHR in the summer of 2011. Before approaching the Regional Extension Center for assistance, Dr. Boman started his process off the right way by doing research through the Internet and professional associations. He then integrated his knowledge with the information and assistance provided by HealthInsight. The next critical step ensuring long-term success was to integrate his entire staff in the evaluation and review process of the EHR vendors.
In early January Dr. Boman and his staff completed an extremely important evaluation process and significant due diligence around his chosen EHR vendor. They signed agreements to start their EHR implementation project and reach Meaningful Use before the end of the 2012 calendar year. There is no doubt that Dr. Boman's dedication to the first steps of EHR adoption will continue to progress to process improvement and Meaningful Use goals. |

ONC Launches the Healthy New Year Video Challenge, First in a Series of Video Contests
To get the New Year off to a healthy start, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is launching the Healthy New Year Video Challenge, the first in a series of video challenges through which members of the public will get a chance to share personal stories about how they use health information technology (health IT) to improve their health or the health of a loved one. Each challenge will require the creation of a short video clip on a particular theme, and will award cash prizes to winners in several categories. Entrants won't need highly specialized equipment-a standard video recorder or phone with a video function will work.
The theme of the first challenge is using health IT to support New Year's resolutions. Cash prizes totaling $5000 will be distributed among the producers of the winning videos. The video contest is open until February 16, 2012.
Sample entries could include the following types of resolutions:
- I will set up an online personal health record for myself (or another family member) so I can have all of my health information conveniently stored in one place.
- I will find an online community that helps me figure out the best ways to manage my health condition (depression, cancer, diabetes, etc.).
- I will use a wireless pedometer to help me track my physical activity on a computer and remind me to increase the number of steps I take per day.
- I will find an app on my Smartphone to help me track my food intake so I can lose 10 pounds by my high school reunion.
ONC's one-stop shop for consumer information on health IT-HealthIT.gov - already features several compelling stories about how health IT has helped people and their health care providers save lives, beat cancer, and weather a natural disaster. The video challenges are a chance to add your story to the mix and win cash prizes. Future video challenges will include among other themes: using health IT to maintain a healthy heart; support the role of caregivers; and manage health care dollars and time more wisely. |
