Dear ,

Have you ever felt like God wasn't doing anything about...anything?  There are periods in our lives when we sense God's presence all around us, and there also seem to be times when God appears to be absent.  It's hard to give thanks during times like this, isn't it?

Faced with a time like this, I turned to a trusted friend.  He asked me to look up Hebrews 13:8:   "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."  "If you believe this," he said, "you have to wonder if God is actually far away or if you're just having trouble seeing him."

Habakkuk, the Old Testament prophet, struggled with this, too.  In the book of Habakkuk 1:2-4, the prophet complains that God doesn't listen to his cries or even save people from the struggles of the world.  Yet, God speaks to him, saying, "...be astonished! Be astounded! For work is being done in your days that you would not believe if you were told."  God is assuring Habakkuk of God's presence and activity in the world even when Habakkuk couldn't sense it.

Even when it feels as if God is nowhere to be found, we can be assured that God is, in fact, present and active in the world and in our lives.  God is always active, extending grace and working towards the redemption and re-creation of all things.

We just have to change our perspective.  We have to pry our gaze from the struggle and allow it to rest on God. This takes practice.  So, I invite you to practice seeing and sensing the presence of God as we excel in Everyday Thanks-living.  Each morning or each evening, I invite you to take 5 minutes to pray to God, giving thanks for God's work in your life that day.

Seeking to excel in Everyday Thanks-living,

Jim Morrow

Red "Love" Scarves for Wesley

Because the United Way was unable to meet their 2010 campaign goal, Wesley Community Centers lost $40,000 in funding for their many wonderful programs. The Prayer Shawl ladies decided to knit red "love" scarves to help Wesley in a small way. For $50, you may choose any handmade red scarf from their very large selection and the funds will go directly to Wesley Community Centers to support their programs. This project will begin in November at the UMW General Meeting on November 9th at 7:00PM and each Circle meeting, and continue until Christmas at other venues. Please make checks payable to IOHUMC and mark it "Prayer Shawl/Wesley." Let's wear red until the Love Walk on February 12th and on Valentine's Day!

WESLEY COMMUNITY CENTER THANKSGIVING PROJECT

The UMW is providing an opportunity for church members to Excel in Generosity by contributing to a Thanksgiving dinner for 118 families at Wesley Community Center.

We invite you to:Fill a grocery bag with the specific items on our shopping list, or give a cash donation for roasting hens.

Empty bags will be available in the church hallway before Wednesday night dinner on Nov.10 and on Sun. morning Nov.14. Filled bags must be returned to the church no later than noon on Fri. Nov.19. Checks for the hens are to be made payable to IOHUMC and designated for the Thanksgiving Project. For more information contact Betsy Hines 354-8957.

Music Ministries

Last Sunday there was a meeting concerning next summer's Youth Choir Tour to Colorado Springs.  Any youth or parents who missed the meeting can pick up information and registration forms in the music office, or contact the Vogelsangs.

This year's Community Thanksgiving Service will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Sunday evening, November 21, at 7:00PM.  The choirs from participating churches will gather in their sanctuary before the service to prepare the music.  We welcome all who would like to sing in this combined choir to join us.

The Chancel Choir is preparing special Christmas music for December 12, including Mark Hayes' new cantata, Child of Hope.  Spurred by our new Arts from the Island mission emphasis, we will also present the cantata and a free dinner on Saturday, December 18, at 5:00PM at New Covenant UMC for the inner city poor and homeless community.  We invite all interested singers to join us, even if only available for one of the events.  We will follow the same Wednesday rehearsal schedule throughout November, beginning at 7:00PM with the Christmas music, then practicing weekly anthems from 8:00 to 9:00PM.  See the Vogelsangs for more information.
