Dear ,
Everyday Thanks-living
Sundays, November 7-November 21
This Sunday we begin our new series, Everyday Thanks-living. During this 3 week series, we will seek to excel in cultivating an orientation of giving thanks in our daily living-an attitude of everyday thanks-living. As Christians we have a great deal to be thankful for: salvation, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the unconditional love of God, deep joy in the midst of a crazy world, God's provision, and everlasting life.
It is a powerful thing to thank God for the big and out-of-the-ordinary ways that God works in our lives. An even more powerful thing to "give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). However, this can be difficult. It is quite easy to let the great work of God in our everyday lives become routine or taken for granted.
We can see this difficulty in the life of the Israelites in the book of Exodus. God works miraculously to set the Israelite people free from the bondage of Egypt. What a great thing to give thanks for! That is until the every day, ordinary parts of living get in the way. In 16:3, the Israelites say, "If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt.... There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death." Their inability to recognize God in the midst of their salvation from Egypt makes them desire to become enslaved again or dead!
Giving thanks to God in every circumstance places the focus of our lives back on God. Thanks-living honors God as the sovereign giver of all things. Thanks-living is a powerful antidote to the poison of pride and entitlement...and it is a posture of deep joy!
As you walk with God this week, I invite you to practice everyday thanks-living. Each morning or each evening, I invite you to take 5 minutes to pray to God, giving thanks for God's work in your life that day. May we excel in everyday thanks-living! Join us this week for one of our three worship services!
Don't forget to set your clocks back 1 hour before you go to bed Saturday night! (Thanking God for an extra hour of sleep is a great start to this series!).
Seeking to excel in Everyday Thanks-living,
Jim
Ps: Please continue to pray for our Senior Pastor, Mike Ricker as he travels and ministers in conferences and churches in India this week and next week. If you would like to pray for specific needs in this mission, you can pick up a Prayer Guide at the front office.

Missions & Outreach
Red "Love" Scarves for Wesley
Because the United Way was unable to meet their 2010 campaign goal, Wesley Community Centers lost $40,000 in funding for their many wonderful programs. At the same time, the Friends 'n Needles Prayer Shawl Group has had many requests for red scarves and from these two factors, an idea evolved. The Prayer Shawl ladies decided to knit red "love" scarves to help Wesley in a small way. For $50, you may choose any handmade red scarf from their very large selection and the funds will go directly to Wesley Community Centers to support their programs. This project will begin in November at the UMW General Meeting on November 9th at 7:00PM and each Circle meeting, and continue until Christmas at other venues. Please make checks payable to IOHUMC and mark it "Prayer Shawl/Wesley." Let's wear red until the Love Walk on February 12th and on Valentine's Day!
Wesley Community Center Thanksgiving Project
The UMW is providing an opportunity for church members to Excel in Generosity by contributing to a Thanksgiving dinner for 118 families at Wesley Community Center.
We invite you to:Fill a grocery bag with the specific items on our shopping list, or give a cash donation for roasting hens.
Empty bags will be available in the church hallway before Wednesday night dinner on Nov.10 and on Sun. morning Nov.14. Filled bags must be returned to the church no later than noon on Fri. Nov.19. Checks for the hens are to be made payable to IOHUMC and designated for the Thanksgiving Project. For more information contact Betsy Hines 354-8957.
Friends 'n Needles Prayer Shawl Group
Our next regular meeting is on Thursday, November 11 from 11am until 2pm on Jane Naismith's porch at 21 Bluff Drive at Isle of Hope - with our usual lunch. Bring your current project, relax and enjoy the view. Nancy Hartmann
