                                           Unshakable
                                      August  Sermon Series

In 2007 a devastating earthquake hit the Chincha Alta region of Peru. In the aftermath of the destruction, we worked with local pastors and missionaries to try and provide help, healing and a sense of hope to those suffering from the enormous tragedy. You could not help but notice the lingering fear that gripped the hearts of the people. It was often expressed as the aftershocks continued for months. One thing became glaringly apparent from the beginning. The homes and buildings in that region were not constructed to endure an earthquake of that magnitude. We have obviously seen the same sad story in Haiti. In the New Testament, Jesus spoke clearly and often on the importance of building our lives, not just our homes, on a sure foundation. In these challenging and uncertain times, all of us long for a sense of stability, security, something absolutely sure that we can base our life and confidence upon. During the month of August we will focus on this subject during our worship time.  We will walk together through a four- week sermon series called "UNSHAKABLE."  As we close out the last official month of summer, I hope you will make time to be in one of our three Sunday morning worship services. Together we will discover some foundational truths that can provide strong support to our lives in a world that is being shaken to the core.
See you in Worship,
Mike

                                       Hope for Haiti Fast
                             Saturday, July 31 - Sunday, August 1
We encourage everyone who is able, to fast (go without food) beginning at noon on Saturday, July 31st and ending at noon on Sunday, August 1st. We will break our fast on Sunday by celebrating the sacrament of Holy Communion. After the 11:15 worship services, we will gather for a modest meal of beans and rice in the fellowship hall. The meal the children who attend school at OFCB Ministries in Bayonnais receive each school day. At the beans and rice meal, we ask each family to donate an amount equal to what they would have spent on meals during the fast period, or whatever they feel called to give.

 Announcements

The Sugar and Spice Shop for Day on the Island is seeking donations for supplies needed to make Pepper Jelly.  We are in need of Certo Liquid Pectin and 8 oz. Jelly Jars (preferably with regular mouth lids and bands included).  Please drop all items off in the Church office.

New Sunshine Ministry
The Flower Guild is in need of interested volunteers on Monday mornings to put Sunday's sanctuary flowers in bud vases (which are provided) and will need to be delivered to shut ins or/and Nursing Homes. With enough interested volunteers this should require one Monday out of every 8 or so.
This is a wonderful Sunshine ministry that is very rewarding! If interested, please call:

APPEAL FROM the BOARD OF TRUSTEES
As was reported last Sunday, through the month of June we have spent $139,000 more than was received in contributions, which unfortunately has essentially depleted the "unrestricted" reserves we had for operating expenses.  So we must reduce expenses wherever possible, which includes the costs of utilities such as electricity and natural gas.
This is where you can help - The Board of Trustees continues its appeal to you to make the sacrifice of personal comfort by tolerating warmer buildings in the summer and cooler buildings in the winter.  The cooling temperature on thermostats in all buildings will be raised 1 or 2 degrees at-a-time until we find a point of reasonable comfort.  Last Sunday the thermostats in the sanctuary were raised to 70 degrees from the usual 68 degrees; this week we are trying 72 degrees.  Please come dressed for warmer conditions.
Everyone is encouraged to turn off lights in unused spaces and keep doors between conditioned and unconditioned spaces closed as much as possible.  We are investigating other means of saving money/energy, so please pass on to a Trustee or staff member any suggestions you may have.
Thank you for understanding and for your help.
