Dear , Becoming Good Samaritans "Seeking Justice & Reconciliation"
Injustice has many faces. I've seen it in the hollow eyes of children as they foraged through garbage in search of food near a slum in North India; I've seen it through the excessive makeup of a preteen held captive by a brothel owner in Sonagachi (Kolkata's red light district); I've seen it in the scars of some indigenous pastors and missionaries who were beaten for sharing Jesus along the border of India and Pakistan; I've seen it in the disfigured look of those brought to the burn ward of the oldest women's hospital in Asia, after being set on fire by fanatical relatives. I tend to agree with Judith Shklar, who writes in her book The Faces of Injustice, that as spectators we sometimes have a problem distinguishing between misfortune and injustice. That may be true. However, if you are a victim it really doesn't matter what name is chosen to define the horror of an obvious inequity in life. Again, Shklar hits the nail on the head for me when she notes that from the victim's point of view-whether it be one who suffered in an earthquake or as a result of social discrimination-the full definition of injustice must include not only the immediate cause of the disaster but also our refusal to prevent and then to mitigate the damage. I think the rub is seeing things from the victim's point of view. That's the real challenge for us follower's of Jesus. Yet, I think that is at least one of the main points Jesus was driving at when he told the story of the Good Samaritan. Life looks different when you're a victim lying in a ditch. By the way, it will also look different if you are courageous enough to climb down in the ditch with the victim of an injustice. After all, isn't that why the Samaritan is called "good"? He wasn't passive. He acted in a way that was just and right. John Perkins in Beyond Charity writes, "Justice, for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, is not a good idea, a noble aspiration, a theoretical satisfaction or an impersonal principle-it is his beating heart." I am truly grateful to be part of a Church that is seeking to reflect the beating heart of Christ. The last few weeks I have had the privilege of seeing teams leave the comfort of "our side of the road" to share the love of Jesus with folks everywhere. In Brunswick, West Virginia, South Carolina, and soon in Mexico, oh yea and even in the Green House, you could hear the sound of the beating heart of Christ. Yes, injustice has a lot of faces but I thank God for a Church that is at least seeking to put a face on ministries that reflect justice and compassion. Finding new ways to Love, Grow, Serve, Share, Mike |

Missions & Outreach
Church-wide Fast for Haiti "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat." Matthew 25:35 While in Bayonnais, Haiti this year, the mission team members were struck by the severity of the hunger there. The depressed economy and the earthquake in Port Au Prince have taken a toll on the people who already knew hunger all too well. Since before our return to Savannah, the team has been praying for God's guidance as we seek ways to help alleviate the hunger and suffering. We would like to offer our church family the opportunity to fast and pray as a body of believers for the people of Haiti. We encourage everyone who is able, to fast beginning at noon on Saturday, July 31st and ending at noon on Sunday, August 1st. The fast will be broken as we receive communion during worship that morning. After the 11:15 worship services, we will come together for a modest meal of beans and rice in the fellowship hall. (The children who attend school at OFCB receive a meal of beans and rice each school day. For many of them, it is the only meal they receive. It is not uncommon for children who do not attend school there to go for days without a meal.) At the meal, we ask each family to donate an amount equal to what they would have spent on meals during the fast period or whatever they feel called to give. If you are unable to fast, you might consider giving up something that you enjoy-your iPod or television. Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and all those around the world who live in poverty. Call Julie with any questions.
