Dear ,

                                                RETHINK CHURCH!
WHAT IF WE RETHINK CHURCH, NOT IN TERMS OF WHAT IT IS, BUT WHAT IT COULD BE?
During January and part of February we are challenging our congregation to Rethink Church! For many persons, the word CHURCH is a noun. It is a building, a place we go. While that is certainly an important part of our being the church, Christ calls us to more than simply attending and listening. He calls us to action! In that sense CHURCH becomes a verb. CHURCH IS NOT SO MUCH A PLACE WE GO AS IT IS WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE ARE!
"Jesus Christ loved the church and gave himself for it" and for all who seek to follow him. During the next several weeks, we want to look together at what it really means to be the church. Here are the topics with which we will be dealing during our times of worship and in other settings:
JANUARY 10 - "Not a Place we go, but what we do and who we are" This past Sunday, we  looked at Christ's invitation to be a part of His church. Luke 14:15-24
Sanctuary Worship - Dr. Parr; Anchor Worship - Rev. Reese
JANUARY 17 - "Open, not an Adjective, but a Verb! We will share together a call to action.  Matt. 25: 31-40. Sanctuary Worship -Rev. Reese; Anchor Worship- Rev. Procopio
JANUARY 24 - "Welcome: From the Inside Out and the Outside In"  Acts 2:42-47
Sanctuary Worship - Rev. Reese; Anchor Worship - Rev. Prevatt
JANUARY 31 -  Sanctuary Worship - UMW Sunday - Kathleen Kilbourne, speaking
Anchor Worship - "Reaching Those Within the Walls" Acts 6:1-7 - Rev. Reese
FEBRUARY 7 - HOLY COMMUNION "How We are known Depends on How We Connect" Matt. 9:9-13
Sanctuary Worship - Rev. Reese; Anchor Worship - Dr. Parr
FEBRUARY 14 - "Every Church Has a Name - It May Not Be the one on the Sign"
Luke 18:35-43 Sanctuary Worship - Rev. Reese; Anchor Worship- Rev. Procopio
                                     LET'S RETHINK CHURCH, TOGETHER!

                                           CHURCH COUNCIL AND MIT
At our Church Council Retreat on January 9 we brought together the Council members and the members of the Ministry Improvement Team (MIT). For several months, the Ministry Improvement Team has been  hard at work to enable us to "take our ministries at Isle of Hope UMC to the next level." Our goal is "Excellence in Ministry". That does not mean "perfection", but rather challenging one another, laity and clergy alike, to give our best efforts. The Council voted at our Charge Conference in November 2009 to merge the Council and the Ministry Improvement Team for the purpose of working and growing our ministries at a higher level. This took place at the Council Retreat and along with it we adopted a new "MISSION/VISION  STATEMENT" for Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. It grew out of the statement which we have used since before "Vision 2000". The new one is easier to remember and our hope is that the members of the congregation  will  memorize it and apply it to all we do. The Statement reads:
LOVE, GROW, SERVE, SHARE!  You will hear much more about this in the weeks to come.

Urban Missionaries
Rev. Andrew Young the pastor at New Covenant Church, formerly Epworth UMC, has requested that IOHUMC "send" some of our church members to New Covenant to be "Urban Missionaries". As he works to revitalize New Covenant, he needs people to serve in all areas of church life - greeters, ushers, Sunday school teachers, finance committee, missions-outreach and so on. The following IOHUMC members have committed for a designated period of time to worship and serve at New Covenant Church in a variety of roles. What an awesome way to "be the church" by helping another church to grow. If you would be interested in learning more about this, please contact Julie.

Missions & Outreach

Will Peter shave his head?
The Organization for the Christian Force of Bayonnais (OFCB) is in the worst financial crisis since its inception in 1993.  The school is two months behind on paying its teachers.  Recently, however, a nonprofit called World of God has begun streamlining sponsorship of OFCB students in Haiti and other students in Liberia.  They request a monthly commitment of $35.  Through the sponsorship you may develop a personal relationship with a child by exchanging letters and pictures. Your monthly support will also provide uniforms, books, school supplies and Christian outreach. Peter Daniel has committed to shaving his head if he can get 20 people to sponsor children. He needs 7 more sponsors! If you are interested in sponsoring a child contact Peter Daniel at peterbdaniel@gmail.com and visit www.worldofgod.org.
National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness
Jan. 11 was declared as a "National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness" in hopes that many in the U.S. would educate themselves about this horrible situation. The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are at least 12.3 million adults and children in forced labor, bonded labor, and commercial sexual servitude at any given time. In short, human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery.
Although most persons being trafficked live outside the U.S., it is not immune to the problem. The U.S. Dept. of State estimates that each year between 18,000 and 20,000 victims are trafficked into the U.S. Many trafficked persons are women and children coercively brought into the sex industry and other kinds of labor.
The United Methodist Church's 2004 Book of Resolutions calls us to educate ourselves about this issue and work for its eradication: "The United Methodist Church is called to model that the church universal is the very first place to which people can turn in their hunger for justice, wholeness and sanctuary." Educate yourself by visiting:  http://www.state.gov/g/tip. or www.ijm.org. Please pray for victims of human trafficking and God's guidance as we seek ways to eradicate this terrible injustice.
"Going Casual for The Christ Child's Nest"
On Sunday, January 24th, you will have the opportunity to dress casually for all worship services to raise support for The Christ Child's Nest. God Squad is sponsoring this event and will be selling tags in the church hallway for $1.00 on Sunday, January 17th, Wednesday, January 20th at Wednesday Night Supper and on Sunday, January 24th. So, purchase a tag for a dollar, dress casually and wear your tag on Sunday, January 24th and show your support for the children at The Christ Child's Nest.
