Dear , On Sunday December 6, we will celebrate the second Sunday of Advent at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. As last week's Glad Tidings front page reminded us, Advent is a "Season of Preparation." It is a time when we prepare to receive Christ anew at Christmastime. During the four Sundays of Advent, we have planned our worship services around the theme, "TIMELESS TRUTHS IN A TRANSIENT TODAY: A Journey to Christmas." Last Sunday, we looked at Christmas through the eyes of "Mary" the mother of Jesus as she journeyed to his birth. This Sunday, the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed, during the Sanctuary Services at 8:45 and 11:15 AM, and the Anchor, non- traditional Service at 11:15 AM. In the sanctuary, Holy Communion will be observed in the traditional manner by kneeling at the altar. In the Fellowship Hall for the Anchor Service, we will receive the elements by Intinction. These worship services will help us focus on the meaning of Advent as this Sunday we talk about "Joseph" who was also on a journey to Christmas. We remember the difficult world into which Jesus was born and knowing that the world is no less difficult today, we make our Communion Offering for the World Aids Day Observance. The Chrismon Tree found in the Sanctuary has become very much a part of our celebration of the Christmas Season. The word chrismon is a combination of parts of two words: CHRISt and MONogram. A chrismon is a monogram of Christ. The sketches of the chrismons were originally designed by the earliest Christians. The monograms were found in many places, such as on doors of buildings, in the catacombs, on jewelry and utensils. Early Christians, living under foreign rule and subject to being punished for not worshipping the Emperor, used them to identify themselves to each other. These symbols became ways of transmitting the Christian faith from the artist to the viewer. The inspiration which they gave was passed on to others. The Chrismon Tree has become widely used in churches to help celebrate the true meaning of the Advent Season. We are grateful to our members and friends who have across the years, some in very recent days, given their time to craft the chrismons which make our tree an inspiration during this Season. Two Sundays of Advent remain after this Sunday. On December 13 we will worship in the 8:45 and 11:15 AM Sanctuary Service with the Christmas Cantata by our Chancel Choir, "Festival of Carols" by Joseph Martin. There will be no "Anchor" Worship service on that Sunday. On the Sunday before Christmas, Dec. 20 at morning Worship we will speak of the "Shepherds" who also journeyed to Christmas. That evening at 5 PM we will enjoy our children's Christmas Pageant in the Fellowship Hall. Then on Christmas Eve we will have our "Candlelight/Communion services at 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 8:00 PM. On that night the message will center around "Jesus", of course. I hope you will be in your place for each of these times of worship as we seek to understand "Timeless Truths in a Transient Today: A journey to Christmas." Dick Reese |

Wesley Thanksgiving Project a Success Many thanks to the congregation and many volunteers who assisted in providing and loading grocery bags and large roasting hens going to the families at Wesley Community Center. We were able to provide 120 families with fixings for their Thanksgiving meal. The Monday morning bag-loader helpers were terrific and made for quick work! It is a privilege to be part of a congregation that is faithful and so generous, even in a tough economy. Gina Reed UMW Missions Coordinator Year-End Contributions Please remember that any contributions you expect to have included in '09 gifts must be received in the Church office no later than midnight December 31. There is one exception: checks that are mailed and postmarked in 2009 can be included. Also, if you are planning to gift any stock or other assets, please start this process as soon as possible as these gifts take longer to administer. If you are considering a gift from your IRA tax free distribution, which has been extending for 2009, then please begin this as soon as possible. Please contact Linton Smith or Shirley Carter at the Church office if you have any questions.

Please note that we will not be participating in the Angel Tree Program this year. Due to the economy, the Angel Tree Regional office was closed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. World AIDS Day December 1st was World AIDS Day. Our communion offering on Sunday December 6th will support the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund. The primary purpose of the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund is to raise $8 million-representing a $1 commitment of every United Methodist in the U.S. The GAF supports education, prevention, care, and treatment programs for people living with HIV/AIDS around the globe. The United Methodist Global AIDS Fund does not overlook the crisis in the U.S. The GAF Plan specifies that 25 percent of what each annual conference raises should be used in that conference for AIDS work, either locally or in global projects. The Christ Child's Nest During this season of Thanksgiving, a special word of thanks to everyone who has supported The Christ Child's Nest throughout the years and in their most recent time of need. Due to new laws in Guatemala, the Nest received 10 new children at one time making the total number of children living there to be around 70. Many individuals and groups have generously responded allowing us to send the funding needed to care for the children for the month of December. Thank you to the UMW Circles, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, Beth Palmer's sale of Guatemalan items, the youth (check out Mackay's shaved head and Jocelyn's colorful hair in response to the youth's gift of $431.53), the staff and the many, many people who have shared their gifts to bless the children in Guatemala. Watch for a "Dress Down Sunday" in January sponsored by God Squad to also support the Nest.
