Dear , FAITH OR FEAR IN THE MIDST OF CRISIS? Unless you or I have been living under a rock during recent months, we could hardly argue with the statement, "we are living in uncertain economic times." How do we deal with such times? Do we live though these days in fear or in faith? Words such as "stress", "anxiety", and "fear" are used by many to talk about the times through which we are living. Many around us, perhaps some of us as well, are responding much like the Israelites when God delivered them from slavery in Egypt and brought them to the southern border of the Promised Land. God told Moses to send some men to explore the land. Twelve persons were sent to spy out the land and return to make a report. The explorers returned to report that the land was flowing with "milk and honey". But, they said, "there are GIANTS living in the land, how can we take the land from them? They are bigger and stronger than we are!" Ten of the explorers spoke against moving into the land which God had promised. But Joshua and Caleb spoke in a more positive way saying, "We should go up and take the land, for we can certainly do it!" "Do not be afraid of the people in the land, for God is with us!" The other ten explorers wanted to stone Joshua and Caleb and said, "let's elect new leaders and return to Egypt." God told the people that they would not enter the Promised Land, their children would enter, but this generation would wander for forty years in the desert - all because of fear. Are you and I living in fear or in faith? The scriptures remind of several keys to help us live in faith instead of fear: I. TRUST GOD- "I will lift up my eyes to the hills- from where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth" Psalms 121:1-2 II. BE THANKFUL- "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances ." I Thessalonians 5:16-18 III. SERVE OTHERS- "They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share... so that they may take hold of life that really is life." I Timothy 6:18-19 Make your plans to be in Sunday School and at least one of the three Morning Worship Services this Sunday October 11 as we discuss "Faith in the Midst of Financial Crisis." We are living in uncertain times, but one thing is sure, God has promised to be with us, and God's promises never fail! Dick Reese |

Missions & Outreach
START YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EARLY at the Friends n' Needles fabulous Fashion Show on Tuesday, October 27 at 7 PM. L.O.V.E. Mentors Return to IOH Elementary SchoolSuccess in reading and life changing outcomes were provided by nearly 20 L.O.V.E. (local outreach volunteer educators) mentors from IOHUMC for under-achieving students from January until May 2009. Comments from teachers like: "went from failing grades to honor roll" and "is not the same child he was before he met his mentor", "progressed from reading at a 3rd grade level to 5th grade and passed her CRCT with flying colors" prove that mentoring makes a difference. An increased enrollment of over 100 students and the addition of a 6th grade level present an opportunity for us to make an even bigger impact in the IOH community. Unlike many mission opportunities, your service as a L.O.V.E. mentor occurs on the day and at the time of your choosing between the hours of 9am and 3:30 pm. One half hour weekly of consistent one-on-one mentoring with an under-achieving reader using materials we provide and train you to use enriches you along with the student. To join our mentoring team or to ask questions call Betsy Hines 354-8957 or the church office. Mission Teams

A bunch of us went and participated in a mini-service day this past Saturday. We worked on a home, building a wheelchair ramp. This was done to pair with our MYF lesson on service. We hope you join us as we wrap up our "I Like A Challenge" series. Ski Retreat sign-ups have started. Letters have been mailed - first deposit is due Sun. Oct. 18th! We will be going to Lake Junaluska MLK weekend (Jan. 15h-18th) and participating in their winter-themed retreat "Thaw". We hope you join us! Pancake Breakfast & Make A Difference Day! On Sat. Oct. 24th, we will start at 8AM with a pancake breakfast, and then we will be splitting up and doing different service projects in and around Savannah. Come and bring a servant's heart, ready to serve! On Sun. Oct. 25th, we will be having a Fish Fry & Line Dance - the fun begins at 5:30PM. Music & Fine Arts
1st-5th Grade singers in Kids of the Kingdom I & II should remember that we sing in worship on Sunday, October 18. Don't miss our last rehearsal next Wednesday, October 14! We will gather in the 5th grade Sunday School classroom at 8:30AM on the 18th to warm up. The Men's Chorus has begun another series of rehearsals on Sundays at 7PM. We plan to sing in worship on Consecration Sunday, November 8. This is a great way to enjoy the inspiring music and great fellowship of a choir with only a short-term commitment. ALL men are welcome and encouraged to join us! The next event sponsored by Arts on the Island will be the fourth annual Linedance for Missions, following Make a Difference Day and in conjunction with the church-wide fish fry on Sunday, October 25. Proceeds will go once again to the Savannah Step-Up Program, which provides free bus passes to struggling local families. Kevin & Nancy
