Dear ,

Go in His Name

This will be Caryn Andrews' last Sunday at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. It has been my privilege to serve beside her for the past two and one half years. From the outset, there was no question that Caryn has a passion for missions. She longs for a day when all people have access to the Good News, the weak find justice and there are no longer any poor. She has worked tirelessly leading our church family as we strive to share the love of Christ with our neighbors throughout the world. Caryn has voluntarily taken on other responsibilities in the church as well. Just to name a few, she and Joshua Grotheer developed our E-newsletter. And, thanks to their efforts, we also have a new, very appealing, easy to use website.

As sad as we are to see Caryn, Jeff, Duncan, Grace and Nicholas leave IOHUMC, it is apparent that God's hand is in their move to Colorado Springs. During the past 2 years, Caryn and Jeff have worked hard to strengthen our relationship with the Russia Initiative.  Stirred by their personal story (Nicholas was adopted from Russia) along with a dream for a Russia where Christians can worship freely, youth have a hope and a future and there are no more orphans; they have enabled IOHUMC to actively partner with the United Methodist Church in Eurasia. Coincidently (or is that a God-incidence), the Russia Initiative has strong ties in the Colorado Springs area. Caryn and Jeff plan to be liaisons to the churches in Colorado and Eurasia and IOHUMC, so that we may work together as the Body of Christ to spread the gospel and seek justice. Caryn also plans to present the ministries of The Christ Child's Nest and Mission on the Move to churches in her new community and hopefully grow support for them.

Caryn has touched many lives, both within the walls of our church as well as outside these walls. I am eager to see what God has in store for her and her family as they begin this new season of their lives. Please keep them in your prayers.

                                                                                        Julie

In honor of Caryn Andrews, the Communion offering this Sunday will go to the Russia Initiative. The Russia Initiative is a ministry of the United Methodist Church that supports churches, pastors and programs in the Eurasia area. IOHUMC is a supportive congregation for Christ the Savior UMC in St. Petersburg, Russia. We support this church financially as well as spiritually through correspondence and prayers.

New Parsonage
Isle of Hope UMC has a new parsonage. The Parrs are moving from 15 Jameswood to 117 Chriswoodell. The Trustees are responsible for the property of the Church including two parsonages. When considering our long-term parsonage needs, the Trustees with the help of a qualified subcommittee, evaluated the following:

1. District requirements for parsonages
2. Upgrades required for the Jameswood Avenue and disruption
3. Desired location for parsonage
4. Current market conditions
5. Financial issues-current and longer term

As a result of the analysis, and in accordance with the 2009 budget, the Trustees recommended to the Church Conference that 117 Chriswoodell be purchased to replace 15 Jameswood. The proposal included selling the Jameswood home to finance part of the purchase price. On May 18, 2009, District Superintendent Howell chaired a Church Conference and approved the recommendation. The process was done in accordance with the United Methodist Discipline which included approval by the District Board on Building and Location.

The Trustees continue to work on projects for the long-term missions of the church. The current economic situation in terms of home prices and interest rates made it a good time to buy property. We are so blessed as a church.
If you have questions, please contact Sam McCachern. The trustees make regular reports to the Church Council. Church members are invited to attend those meetings.

Green House Update
Hope all of you are aware that the Green House construction is completed and the building is in use by the youth and other groups.  The congregation is to be commended for the outstanding support given to this project; we are proud of the facility and for the manner in which it has been funded.
The total cost to date is $2,663,205, which is about 3.2% over the original budget. However, due to interest payments, that amount will increase over time until the loan is paid off. Funds received for the project, both pledges paid and other gifts, have allowed us to pay $2,035,252 of the cost, leaving a loan balance of about $628,000.

Assuming that the $540,812 of unpaid pledges is paid before March 2010, the end of the "Third Pledge Year," then we need about $90,000 in new funding. Therefore, we welcome additional gifts (contributions, memorials, honorariums, brick pavers, etc) or pledges from new members who didn't have the opportunity to pledge during the fundraising activities as well as from those who want to increase their previous pledge. Again, we thank you for helping to add this new and wonderful building to our Church campus.

Second Harvest Food Bank Work Day
Smithfield Hams has donated a large supply of hams to Second Harvest Food Bank. On Wednesday, July 29th at 2:00PM, SHFB needs volunteers to help unload the hams. Paula Dean will be at this event at which time a "commercial" will be filmed. If you would like to help unload the hams, please contact Julie. All volunteers will need to sign a media release to participate. We will meet at the church at 1:00PM to caravan to SHFB.

Baby Hats for Africa
Please join us as we make simple baby hats for newborns in Africa. In many African countries, one in 10 babies dies before their first birthday. In countries where resources are limited and the temperature often drops into the 50s, it is a struggle to keep sick newborns and premature babies warm enough. A simple baby hat to keep them warm is often all that is needed. We will meet Saturday, August 1st in the Seeker's SS classroom from 9:00Am-12 noon to make these easy hats. If you can't sew, we need people to cut them out, too.

Adults Are Jammin' in July
July 19th       Generous Orthodoxy with Charles C. Watson, Jr.
Chuck Watson is expert in the use of satellites and computer models to study natural hazards, environmental impacts, and human disasters such as terrorism and industrial accidents . He has published over 70 peer reviewed articles and paper in the field of meteorology, engineering, computer science, aerospace and satellite remote sensing, and emergency management. While studying and working with the Russian space program after the fall of communism, Chuck was exposed to the resurgent Russian Orthodox Church, he was impressed with the theology and closeness to "original" Christianity without the legalistic overtones. By 2003 he was attending St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church regularly, and that fall he was received into the Church, as well as recruited to do the epistle readings. Chuck was tonsured a Psalti/Reader in the Orthodox Church by Metropolitan ALEXIOS in 2006, and does church tours and lectures when Father Vasile needs help. Chuck's extensive study of Christianity, Judaism, and other religions, will provide a balanced perspective on where Orthodoxy stands in both the Christian family and religion in general.
