Dear ,

AFTER ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2009
United Methodist Churches are organized into Annual Conferences. Isle of Hope UMC is in the South Georgia Annual Conference. The South Georgia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church met in Columbus, Georgia June 7-10.  As the name Annual Conference indicates, this is a meeting which occurs once each year, unless there is a need to call a Special Session. Attending  the Annual Conference  this years were our Lay Members Art and Matra Jordan. Dean and Betsy Hines, our other Lay Members were scheduled to attend, but Dean became ill and they could not be present.  Our pastors, Dick Reese, Frank Parr, Meg Procopio, and Rob Grotheer were also in attendance. The Conference, along with other business matters,  voted on 32 Amendments to the Constitution of the United Methodist Church and heard a report from a Task Force proposing to build an Administrative Office Building for the Conference. You can check out the work of the Conference on the website: www.sgaumc.com

As a result of the Conference, several changes are taking place. Rob Grotheer will become the pastor of the College Place UMC in Brunswick, Georgia effective June 17. If you wish to send Rob and Gayle a note, their new address will be: 3890 Altama Ave., Brunswick, GA 31520. Here at Isle of Hope UMC, Jocelyn Chiu and Mackay Lee will serve as Assistant Youth Directors during the next 12 months while we begin  a search for a Youth Minister. Alex Simmons, Jeremy Akin, and Richard Lee will serve as Interns with children and youth this summer.

Bishop James King and the South Georgia Cabinet also announced that Dick Reese, Meg Procopio, and Frank Parr will continue as pastors of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church for the 2009-2010 Conference year. Pastors in the United Methodist Church are assigned for one year at a time, although the same assignment can continue  for several years.

Another new addition to our staff here at Isle of Hope UMC is Lindsay Bradley. She will be the Worship Leader for the new non-traditional  Worship Service. There will be some preview services in August, with the new Service meeting on a weekly basis starting in September.

The busy summer schedule is now in full swing! Your support is needed in many ways: (1) Find your place in worship regularly during these months; (2) Pray for the continued work of the church in the midst of several changes; (3) Be faithful with your financial support. The summer is often the time when so much is going on, and our offerings tend to lag behind the needs. Please be regular in your gifts; and (4) Find your place of service in the many activities that are just ahead.
God wants to do the work of His church through you and me. Let us covenant together  to be faithful to Him and His church. We are workers together with Him.

                                                                   Dick Reese

VBS Vent Tent needs your help!
Want to volunteer for VBS but can't? Want to help anyway? Now you can! We need snacks for our VBS teachers to enjoy while taking a much deserved break in the Vent Tent. Please bring a treat for them to the church office on Sunday, June 21 or anytime that week. Some suggestions: brownies, cookies, chips or candy.
Please be generous!

Thank you.  Those words do not touch the enormous gratitude of our family.  This past Sunday melted our hearts.  Thank you for your kind words, for the wonderful reception, for the warm cards and notes of support, for the hugs, for the smiles looking back as I preached, for the pictures, for the autographed tea cooler, for the youth scrapbook, for the holy plate, for the HOPE choir music, for the Hope Band music, for the balcony music, for the chancel choir, for the piano/organ duet, for the generous financial gift, for the awesome love that surrounded every moment of the day.  Our new address is:  Rob and Gayle Grotheer, 23 Fairway Road, Brunswick, GA 31525.  The church is College Place UMC.  Please keep us surrounded in prayer as God grows me into the life of a pastor.

July 5th:Common Ground: A Conversation Between Priest & Pastor
What Catholics and Protestants can learn from each other. This DVD was produced by Kensington Community Church as part of their ministry to foster Christian unity and understanding between Roman Catholic and Evangelical Protestants, after an evening of public dialogue about their differences. A revealing and candid conversation between the leaders of two large churches in Troy Michigan, just north of Detroit, Father John Riccardo of St Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, and Pastor Steve Andrews of Kensington Community Church. Seeking common ground, "the priest and the pastor" respectfully examine the similarities between the two traditions they represent. Regardless of your religious background, you'll be intrigued by their open discussion about:
Salvation             Holy Eucharist      The Virgin Mary
Confession          The Saints            Prayer & Worship
Evangelism          Christian Unity
July 12th:      The Jewels of Judiasm       Rabbi Arnold Blezer
Rabbi Belzer is the rabbi of Congregation Mickve Israel in Savannah, Georgia, founded in 1733, the third oldest Jewish congregation in America. Raised in Westchester County, New York, he is a graduate of Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he majored in history. He was ordained rabbi and received B.H.L., M.A.H.L. and D.D, (hon.) degrees from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in New York. Rabbi Belzer has extensive experience with interfaith dialogue. He is also the Vice-President of the Mastery Foundation, an international ecumenical organization, which conducts training workshops for clergy and lay people in the technology of transformation and centering prayer.
July 19th:   Generous Orthodoxy      Charles C. Watson, Jr.
Chuck Watson is expert in the use of satellites and computer models to study natural hazards, environmental impacts, and human disasters such as terrorism and industrial accidents . He has published over 70 peer reviewed articles and paper in the field of meteorology, engineering, computer science, aerospace and satellite remote sensing, and emergency management. While studying and working with the Russian space program after the fall of communism, Chuck was exposed to the resurgent Russian Orthodox Church, he was impressed with the theology and closeness to "original" Christianity without the legalistic overtones. By 2003 he was attending St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church regularly, and that fall he was received into the Church, as well as recruited to do the epistle readings. Chuck was tonsured a Psalti/Reader in the Orthodox Church by Metropolitan ALEXIOS in 2006, and does church tours and lectures when Father Vasile needs help. Chuck's extensive study of Christianity, Judaism, and other religions, will provide a balanced perspective on where Orthodoxy stands in both the Christian family and religion in general.
July 26th: Methodism-There is a Method to Our Madness
Dr. Frank M. Parr

Frank is our Associate Pastor. He is a native of Savannah. He graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC, with a double major of Psychology and Religion and Philosophy. He received a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. In college and seminary Frank especially enjoyed the area of Christian learning and teaching through an experiential model. While at Porterfield UMC in Albany, GA, and at St. Luke UMC in Columbus, GA, Frank designed an experiential way of teaching the development of the United Methodist Church in America. He made use of Savannah's special heritage reflected in her many congregations to bring alive our United Methodist Church history.
