Why Pele doesn't like geothermal
goddess peleThat's the title of this delightful article by one very frustrated author. He'd like to see the Hawaiians do what the folks in Iceland are doing. It doesn't look like it's going to happen, though, and for a lot of reasons, all of which have me shaking my head.

Flying turbines!
airborne wind turbineSubscriber, Shawn Wenger, shared this with me and I found it interesting. Note the military connection. I was driving from Louisville to Chicago on Interstate 65 last month when I came upon one very impressive wind farm. At 70 mph, it took me more than 10 minutes to pass the whole works. I Googled and learned that there are nearly 1,000 wind turbines in that one grouping. It looked like a scene from War of the Worlds.
What's undermining energy efficiency?
target and dartIt's a combination of subsidies and human nature according to Elisa Wood in this very provocative article. Love to hear your thoughts on this. And thanks to subscriber, Robert O'Brien, for sharing.

A terrific book
lessons learned in boiler roomMy friend, Ray Wohlfarth (who writes for Plumbing & Mechanical magazine), just published a teriffic book about commercial boiler rooms. I read it and learned a lot. Ray has a wonderful way with stories and more experience than anyone I know when it comes to this subject. Check it out here
Thoughts on TRVs
TRVSpeaking of Plumbing & Mechanical, I wrote this story for them last month. Some things I learned along the way about therrmostatic radiator valves. I hope you like it.

A U.K. view of the smart home
laptopOkay, so first we have this prediction of what's to come as far as running your house from your smart phone. Very nice indeed but still out there in the future. So read on.
And then there's this guy
google calendar diy heating systemAlso from the U.K., who somehow managed to hook up his heater (that's boiler for us Americans) to his Google calendar. I read the story and watched the video and still have no idea how he did it. I wonder if he knows this guy.
Nothing to do with heating
carstensenOlder people are happier. That's the conclusion of Laura Carstensen in this wonderful TED video. She says that older people engage with sadness more comfortably, and that they are more accepting of it. And she says a lot more than that. I'm 62 and have never been happier. How about you?

Hug your kids.

Dan
