Will shale gas hurt renewables?
shale drillingThat's the question the folks at MIT are asking. Sure, it looks great right now, but what about down the road? You know, when most of us are down there with the shale. Here's the story

The 1900 House
1900 houseA few years ago, PBS had a series called The 1900 House (you can get it on DVD). It took place in England and the idea was to strip an old house of all its modern conveniences and get a family to live there for a good long time. It's quite a show, and if you watch it, I promise you'll come away with a great appreciation for things we now consider mundane. Anyway, the 1900 House is no more and is currently for sale. Here's the story.

Prius vs. Efficient Window
windows melt priusAfter you read this story and watch the video, give some thought to how you'd solve this problem if you were Heather. I'd probably use a rock.
Steam Heating App
NYC's greenest skyscrapers
efficient skyscrapersNice quick article here from Inhabitat. I think it's fun to see the regal old Empire State Building, with its 1929 steam system making the cut.
"Cute and disgusting at the same time"
pigeons under heat lampYou know those infrared heaters they put outdoors so you can be warm while waiting? Well, the pigeons of Chicago also know about them, and are taking full advantage. Check this out.

programmable thermostatSome programmable thermostats can confuse the average homeowner. That's what this article is about, and when something is confusing, it doesn't get used properly. Thanks to subscriber, Ray Wohlfarth, for sharing this one. Ray is now writing about commercial boilers for Plumbing & Mechanical magazine. Check him out here
