Passive resistance
Students built this passive house in Kansas, which uses about 90% less energy than an ordinary house, but they can't sell it because it costs somewhat more than that ordinary house (even though heavily discounted). Seems to me that if you can't make a case for payback here, there's not much hope that you'll make your case for, say, a high-efficiency boiler.

Resist an inspection, lose your apartment
It's as simple as that in the U.K., where they take their yearly boiler inspections very seriously. Don't let the inspector in and you get evicted. Simple. Here's the story.

Coal/Wood combo
This is an interesting experiment at Iowa State University. I'll keep an eye out for the results and let you know how it works out. Good use of those Colorado trees.

Brits on Boulder
Here's an article from the BBC on the efforts of the good folks of Boulder, Colorado, perhaps America's greenest city. The Brits are hellbent on making their country more efficient and I think it's interesting to get their perspective on Boulder. The question of that coal-fired plant may find its answer in the Iowa State research. Colorado trees, right?

But then there's this...
We are slow to change, so there will often be opposition to those things that represent a different approach to solving problems, as you can see here.

Best insulation commercial ever!
Not exactly the ending I was expecting. Check it out on YouTube and see what you think.

A salty solution
How do you store solar energy when the sun's not shining? Oh, and I mean on a really large scale. Well, if you're in either Nevada or Sicily (there's a mix for you, eh?), you can store the sun in the salt. Check out this proposal. And thanks to Terry Tekushan for the heads-up!

There's an app for that!
How about this cool app that uses a smart phone's GPS feature to turn your heating/cooling system up and down as you come and go. It just keeps getting better and better!

Long Island Steamheads!
The Lovely Marianne and I will be doing a hometown Dead Men's Steam Night School in Hauppague (if you don't live here, you probably can't say it) on September 28. Be there or be square.
