Bright Ideas
Here's what it's all about. I asked some of the brightest people I know to share their thoughts on how they would handle certain technical challenges. They offered their opinions and the result is this electronic book. Read this one and I guarantee you'll be better at what you do. The title says it all. This one is loaded with Bright Ideas!

The world's prettiest power plant
The Netherlands just opened their newest power plant, which makes electricity and also district heating for the surrounding community. This one's very special, though. Check it out here.

Energy efficiency in the health-care industry
I know that this is a press release, and that it's coming from one of the leading manufacturers of controls. I found the response to the survey interesting, especially when it comes to adjusting HVAC controls. Best line: "The healthcare sector has had an increasing commitment to energy efficiency and we continue to see that with our customers' interest in making investments," said Richard Smith, director, energy solutions healthcare, Johnson Controls. "However, limited access to capital to invest in energy upgrades continues to hold the industry back from reaching the full savings potential of energy efficiency. It is important for healthcare decision-makers to become educated about the alternative financing methods that are emerging." (Those italics are mine. Get it?)

And while we're on that subject
Here's a longish article (it's worth it) that goes into lots of details about what hospitals are doing to become greener. Plenty of specifics here, and much food for thought. Opportunity is knocking. Hear it?

A Boulder move
Boulder, Colorado, long known for its environmental consciousness, is moving closer to a law that will mandate energy efficiency for rental properties. This has been going on in much of Europe for the past few years with their Energy Performance Certificates. This article explains what Boulder is up to. We'll see more of this around the country in the days to come. Stay tuned.

Burp!
It brings a smile to my face to see what the Brits are up to this time. Rather than take the waste from beer-making process (Brits drink 28 million pints of brew each day), they're digesting it and sending the resulting gas back into the national grid. Check it out here. Drink Bass. Warm a Brit!

And then there's this
The Brits are also encouraging their citizens to consider microgeneration. This is where people make their own electricity, and get heat as a byproduct. The world is changing. Want to learn more about this? Check out freewatt here in the U.S.

Holy solar!
One more from the Brits and then I'm done (Promise!). According to this article, British Gas says that houses of worship are particularly well-suited for solar because most of them have large south-facing roofs. I spent a good half-hour wondering why that is, and because I have no life and way too much time on my hands, I came up with this. Not a definitive answer, but it's nice to know there's a guy in England who also has no life.

Rows of houses that are all the same
Here's another of those wacky stories about a housing association that's objecting to one of its member's use of something that's liable to save energy. My favorite quote from this comes from the homeowner, "There are bigger problems in the world than my garage door." Amen!
