Demand-driven district heating
This position paper gave me some good insight into where district heating may be heading. The paper applies specifically to the Ukraine, where they have some interesting heating challenges according to my friend Clif Heeny, who lives there, but note the focus on substations, which make lots of sense to me. Ah, learning every day!

What to do with an old 747?
airplane home
Recycle it into a house! I would love to sit on a porch with this woman and just talk about life.
Honey, I'm cold. Could you have another beer?
I found this brief article to be delightfully wacky, but that's just because my imagination sometimes doesn't know when to quit.
If the tide rises, don't all the boats go with it?
Washington BIA
Not in the minds of the Building Industry Association of Washington State. Or at least that's the way it seems to me after reading this article. If all the homes have to be more energy efficient, then all the prices should go up by the same amount, which really doesn't put anyone at a competitive disadvantage, unless I'm missing something. What's also amusing about this one is that lately, I'm hearing so much screaming about how the Feds should stay out of our lives when it comes to energy, and here we have this powerful association, begging the Feds to rescue them from the state. We sure are living in interesting times.

A factory filled with people picking their ears?
candles
Well, not quite, but the comparison to this proposed method of insulating buildings just sent my imagination romping through a field of wildflowers. Interesting concept, though. Check it out.
The wind and the sun
Turbines in CA
Looks like a nice marriage of the two is soon going to happen in Palm Springs. Here's a project that makes lots of sense. The transmission lines are already in place. The wind blows best at night and the sun, well, the sun is out during the day. Good thinking!

Is biomass carbon neutral?
earth in hand
That's the question that the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources asked and their findings were a bit surprising. Turns out the answer is (as it so often is), It depends! Read all about it here.
Night Schools!
Here's what's coming up. Classic Hydronics in Kingston, NY on August 3, and Dead Men's Steam School in Syracuse on August 4. Hope you can make it!

Hug your kids, and Happy Birthday, America!
