Value is perception
Some thoughts for your consideration this week. If you'd like to comment, please do. I love hearing from you on the Wall.

Well, it has a new heating system
And new central air! Interested in buying the Amityville Horror house? If you act fast, you can have it for just $1.15 million. See you on Halloween.

No nukes
Few nuclear power plants use the water heat for district heating, and we can now add this one to that list. Just too much of a challenge in this case. Scroll to the part about District Heat Transport System, read the specifics, and then think about the size of the pumps. Whoa! Credit the Finns for thinking creatively, though. Gotta love those Scandinavians!

And speaking of nukes
How about this heating project that's been going on at Sandia National Laboratories, from whence our nuclear weapons come? Lots of individual boilers replace a central system, which died because of (and here comes my favorite line in the whole article) "Deferred maintenance costs and equipment corrosion issues that made the system inefficient." Makes me wonder whether the "106 hot water boilers, five steam boilers, new natural gas connections and meters" will get the proper maintenance as years go by. Our tax dollars at work!

Show me the money
That's what a lot of builders are saying when it comes to seeking LEED certification. According to those quoted in this article, there haven't been enough transactions of LEED-certified buildings to date to show where the investment is something that will reap a return. It's not easy being green.

See you in court!
Builders again. In Washington state, they're taking the local government to court because they claim that the locals are asking for more efficiency than the state demands and that's going to make new homes too expensive. Check it out here. Oh, and apparently no one is asking the folks who will be paying for the fuel how they feel about this. Hey, who cares about them?
|
But wait...
According to this story, if you live in Florida, you can now get some money from the state to put in the energy-efficient equipment that the builders say you won't pay for up front, which I guess is true because you won't be paying if the state is paying. Well, you are in a way, but you know what I mean.

Nothing to do with heating
I came across this delightful site, which still has me laughing and shaking my head. I know; it's America, where anyone can sue anyone for anything, but still...
