A challenge to ASHRAE
Data centers are not your typical building when it comes to energy use, or energy efficiency according to the groups that protested ASHRAE's new standards for building efficiency. Read all about it here.

Southern comfort?
You can't assume comfort comes with energy savings (not in this business), but this study done by the smart folks at Duke make a good case for making things more efficient. Lots and lots of jobs, too.

Are Home Information Packs working in the U.K.?
According to this article, they are for the most part. If you're not up to speed on these, a H.I.P. is a report on the condition of a house in the U.K. For the past two years, you've needed one before you can sell your house or commercial building. Compared to what we have in the U.S., these U.K. laws are strict. The topic, as you can imagine, is very political.

The lesson of the Windex bottle
I think you'll like this article. I sure did. It speaks of a work ethic that I admire, and it makes a point that lots of people miss these days (you'll find that in the last couple of lines). Thanks to subscriber, Tom Hallett, for once again finding and sharing a real gem with us.

Twisted thinking?
I've always found Frank Gehry's buildings to be delightful, even if some (many?) do leak. This article quotes some fun things the architect said recently about green buildings. I guess when you live that long you can say pretty much anything you like. So there. Oh, and don't miss the comments after the article. They're a real hoot.

Speaking of fascinating designs
A big thank you to subscriber, Bill Stockhausen, for giving me a heads-up about this project. Lots of thinking went into this one, and I really like the results. Kudos to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and to Bill Stockhausen for sharing with us!

Still not sure
Which freezes faster? Hot water or cold water? I've heard from people for years on this important question and both sides have been convinced that they're right. Here's some more opinion. What do you think?

In spring, my thoughts turn to Mr. Carlson
April 28 marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of Gil Carlson. If you don't recognize the name, here's a story about him and what he did while on this side of the lawn. Thanks, Mr. Carlson.
