INDEPENDENCE  DAY

FlagUSCelebrations come naturally to the good folks at the Texas Pool and this summer there is much to celebrate and be thankful for. First off, I am thankful for opening day. These past few years have witnessed our membership numbers plummet (for many reasons: city pools, personal pools, increasing costs, economic challenges, changing neighborhood demographics, and a general lack of public knowledge about the Texas Pool's very existence), yet through the generosity and hard work of special people, just like you, the Texas Pool opened her doors for the 2009 season of summer swimming. That's something to celebrate. When I ponder membership in the Texas Pool and measure its worth, I am reminded that not all things must be counted in status, services offered, or in what is immediately received for the dollar. Membership in the Texas Pool must be measured in its value for our community, for our own families and for the families of others, for today and for tomorrow. Supporting the Texas Pool is an investment in our neighborhood, and in our American way of life. I am thankful for our American heritage, for the sacrifices and contributions of Americans across the globe and throughout history. Today, together, we celebrate.
And I'll see y'all at the Texas Pool.

"Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith;
to create hope when hope becomes forlorn."
General Douglas MacArthur
WHO'S THE BOSS ?
Kim & Matt
Here's a question I've been recently asked that I'm happy to answer:
"Just who is the boss of the Texas Pool?"
Because the non-profit Texas Pool is in essence owned by its members, each and every member is in fact the boss at the Texas Pool. With lifeguards our only paid staff, it is important that our membership be pro-active in caring for, volunteering, maintaining, and monitoring the Texas Pool ambiance and atmosphere. So if you happen to note inappropriate activity or unsafe conditions,  speak up, take names, and report such incidents to the shift guard (lifeguard designated "in charge") on duty and/or the volunteer Board of Directors. A copy of the Lifeguard (Rules & Regulations) Safety & BOD Manual is kept at the snack shack and may be reviewed by pool members at any time. The BOD (Board of Directors) phone numbers and email addresses are listed on the website and in the snack bar at the pool. Most of the "BOD Squad" live in the neighborhood easily available to the Texas Pool and her people. We love to hear about the good things too, so please share your compliments, concerns, creativity and connections with us. Together, we make a fabulous Texas Pool team boss.
Texas Pool Lifeguards: Neighbors You Should Know

Connor.Conner Knutson, 16, is a 2nd year returning Lifeguard with the Texas Pool. Conner is great with kids and a favorite with the Texas Pool swim lesson set. He learned from friends about the Texas Pool and knew it would be a fabulous place to meet people and have some fun while earning a summer income. Conner plays La Crosse for Plano Senior High where he'll be a junior this fall. Knutson's favorite subject is Math as he considers a future medical degree. If Conner could travel anywhere in the world, he'd head for Italy the land of Lamborghinis (his 1st choice for an ultra cool ride). Look for Conner on the lifeguard stands at the Texas Pool on the Creek.
TEXAS POOL PRESERVATION

TXPLThe success of the non-profit Texas Pool is totally dependent upon memberships, volunteers, and fundraising. Please, help us share the good news about the Texas Pool with your personal contacts and others. Members are invited to take Texas Pool fliers from the basket at the Snack Shack to hand out within the community. Suggestions for flier destinations: the cleaners, the grocery store, coffee shops, restaurants, employee bulletin boards, car windshields, neighbors, friends and family. The number one way that new members learn about the Texas Pool is via person-to-person out-reach. Please help us share the love. With a return to the days of full membership, we can ensure that the Texas Pool is maintained and cared for into the future, for our children, for Texas.

Facilities Update:

Pumps/Saltwater Chlorination System
A malfunctioning pool pump was recently replaced yet we continue to have challenges with the Saltwater System maintaining our chlorine levels. Matt Roddy, our volunteer Facilities Director, is investigating/repairing this problem (thank you Matt for long hours invested!). Our staff has been trained according to new City of Plano guidelines to maintain the purity and safety of the Texas blue Texas Pool waters.

Diving Board Dilema
We have 2 hurdles in our attempt to regain the low diving board for the Texas Pool this season. Expense, the first one, and experience the second. We are in serious need of a volunteer welder to help us refit the diving platform. We welcome any assistance anyone can offer in this regard and are thankful for continued support.

Depth Marker Tiles
The new depth marker tiles are being installed. 1st installation attempt yielded some broken tiles. These beautiful tiles were handpainted and crafted for the Texas Pool by Matt Roddy and his crew at Holman Pottery http://www.holmanpottery.com/
Matt has also been replacing the missing decorative tiles around the Texas Pool rim.

City of Plano Inspection Passed
The Texas Pool was recently inspected by the City of Plano. Changes in chlorination levels were made according to recommendation/new safety guidelines. The Texas Pool passed inspection, certifying the safety and quality of our cool oasis blue waters. Cheers!
