Amazing Generosity of Our Donors!

We are delighted to report that the response to our year-end campaign, the "Rainy Day Recovery Fund", was astounding!  We raised over $5,900, beating our goal of $5,000 and enabling us to take full advantage of the matching grant.  So every dollar donated by you, our generous donors, supporters, and volunteers, combined to raise over $10,000, more than making up for the rainy deficit of Barktoberfest.  These funds will allow us to continue to pay for spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, vet exams, and medical care for dogs at town pounds.  We also will be able to continue to provide Kuranda Beds, toys, collars and leashes and other supplies.  Many of the towns we work with have the most minimal budgets for animal control; without help from PoundHounds, many town dogs would be adopted out without vaccinations and "intact", possibly contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.  Many would not make it out at all, once Lyme disease, heartworm, or broken bones were detected, because there is no budget to pay for treatment.  It's only with your help that we are able to make such a huge difference in the lives of these town dogs.  Our sincerest and most grateful thanks to each and every one of you.

Warmest regards,
Seana Dowling

2008 Review
How did PoundHounds help?

Here are just a few facts and figures to show how your donations and grants helped this past year.  In 2008, PoundHounds worked with over 20 towns to make a difference in the lives of over 200 dogs!  Veterinary care sponsored by PoundHounds for these dogs include:
  • 154 dogs spayed or neutered
  • 85 dogs vaccinated
  • 32 dogs received additional medical care
Additionally, PoundHounds cross-posted 27 dogs available for adoption, sponsored training for 4 dogs, delivered 8 Kuranda Beds to 5 town pounds and, most recently, delivered over 100 Kong toys to 12 pounds.

Important News You Can Use
Peanut Butter Recall

Many manufacturers include peanut butter in their pet food.  Visit the FDA website to make sure you are not feeding your dog a brand of pet food or treats that were involved in the peanut butter recall.  Click on the link and scroll down to find "Pet Food Product Recalls" under "Topics".
Health Check
Routine rectal exams can help keep your dog healthy

If your veterinarian isn't already giving your dog routine rectal exams, ask your vet to do so.  An ounce of prevention might make the difference between treatable and terminal cancer.

Apocrine gland adenocarcinoma--cancer of the anal sacs--is an aggressive cancer that typically metastasizes into the lymph nodes.  These tumors typically occur in older female dogs (10+), but unneutered male dogs are also at risk for the disease.

The anal sacs surround the last inch of the gastrointestinal tract.  Once the tumor forms, it usually grows larger and larger until it compresses the rectal area, causing the dog to have difficulty evacuating its bowels.  Routine rectal exams are important because, unfortunately, by the time owners see a primary symptom of the cancer--the dog straining during a bowel movement--the disease has usually progressed to a point where diagnosis and treatment options are limited and very expensive.

Most veterinarians will refer the case to a surgical speciality center if the owner wishes to battle the disease.  A biopsy (removing a piece of the tumor for examination) is performed while the dog is under sedation.  Once the diagnosis is confirmed, surgery may be an option if the tumor isn't too large.  The surgery is invasive with a painful recovery, often leaving the dog incontinent--a big decision to make, especially for an older pet.  This type of tumor tends to recur, so multiple surgeries may be required.  Radiation and chemotherapy are also treatment options and can be used in combination with surgery or palliatively if the tumor cannot be surgically removed.

Ask the Trainer
It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

We all want our animals to love us. As owners and leaders, we can offer unconditional love, but not unconditional affection.

Typically, a lack of respect leads to a dog making his or her own decisions.  Click here to read more about what Sonia has to say about respect and leadership.

"Ask the Trainer" is written by Sonia Mullen of Canine Techniques.   To read more answers to common questions about dog behavior, visit the "Ask the Trainer" section of the PoundHounds web site.

If you have a question about your dog's behavior, please send your question to info@poundhounds.org and put the word "TRAINER" in the subject line.  We regret that Sonia won't be able to respond personally to every question.

Featured Dog for Adoption:  Murphy

PoundHounds Funds Training to Give Murphy a New Lease on Life

Murphy

In the September issue of the e-Newshound, Murphy was our Featured Dog for Adoption.  Sweet Murphy has not been adopted as of yet and she is in dire need of a home.

One of the challenges that has driven potential adoptors away is that 5 year old Murphy needs to be the only dog in the home.  She's rather aggressive to other dogs and just doesn't want to share her space.  This has been a major hurdle in finding a new home for Murphy.

Billerica ACOs De Maguire and Maureen Ray decided Murphy needed more help than they could provide. Through our Training Program, PoundHounds has funded Murphy's training at Saddleback Pet Services in Northwood, NH.  Trainer Nancy Fantom is working with Murphy on strategies to handle her strong reactions to other dogs.  Nancy also will help place Murphy into the right home.  It was hard for De and Maureen to say good-bye to this sweet girl, but they are thrilled that Murphy will have this chance to find a new life.  If you are interested in learning more about Murphy, contact Nancy at 603-942-5988 or click here to visit our web site
Happy Tails!

Her new owner reports that Summer had some health issues that he needed to tackle, including tape worm, but she is doing well now and has already gained 10 pounds!  Summer likes to go on her daily walks and her owner says that he is so glad that he got her!
Campaign of the Month
Kuranda Bed Program

We had an excellent response to our Kuranda Bed fund-raising campaign in October.  The campaign really seemed to resonate with our dog-loving friends, so we decided to run this campaign again to help provide more dogs in town pounds with the dignity and comfort of sleeping in a dog bed.

Many town pounds lack the funding to provide more than the 'basics' for the dogs in their care:  food, water and shelter.  Dogs are often sleeping on cement floors with only an old towel or blanket for warmth and comfort.  Through Shelter Improvement Program, PoundHounds intends to change that, striving to put 'a bed in every kennel.'

To achieve this goal, we have set up an account with Kuranda Beds, manufacturer of the durable, elevated dog beds that are comfortable for dogs and great for shelters and pounds because they are easy to keep clean.  To order a bed, simply visit the "Donate a Bed" page on the Kuranda Bed website and select PoundHounds, Hopkinton, MA from the drop-down menu.  Kuranda Beds has special pricing for donated beds ranging from $50 for a small bed to $99 for a large.  Most shelters prefer a medium or large bed because they tend to take in more medium and large dogs then they do small dogs.
About MAC
Spay/Neuter License Plates

MAC PlateThe Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) disburses grants to non-profit humane organizations and municipal animal control agencies.  The grants are funded by the sale of the Massachusetts Spay/Neuter License Plate Program.

MAC has provided funds for PoundHounds to pay for spay/neuter procedures for PoundHounds sponsored dogs.  In 2007, funding from MAC allowed PoundHounds to help 8 different town pounds spay/neuter 81 dogs.  Those procedures represent $10,000 in MAC support.

Please show your dedication to animals and help control over-population.  Register your new car or swap your existing plates for spay/neuter plates.

The cost for a license plate is $40.  Of that, $28 funds this statewide program; the remaining $12 is a one-time only cost to cover the manufacturing of the plate.  Two-year renewal fees of $40 go directly to the program.

Learn more about how to obtain a Spay/Neuter license plate.  Visit the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles site.
Thank you for your continued interest and support of the invisible dogs in town pounds.  We can't do it without you!  Please visit the PoundHounds website at:  www.poundhounds.org for more information.  Or, contact us directly:
