Renaming / Rebranding

State working on new names for COTs

By Mary Pickett in The Billings Gazette 2/23/12

Everyone will have to wait a little longer to find out what the new names for the state's five colleges of technology will be. One thing is sure, the "college of technology" will disappear, said John Cech, the state's deputy commissioner for two-year education. Renaming the schools is part of the effort to transform the schools into comprehensive two-year community colleges..

HIT Program Director appointed to national team

Submitted by Dr. Greg Paulauskis, Director, Health Sciences

Susan Whatley, Program Director of the Health Information Transcription program, has been appointed to the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) Credentialing Development Team.

As a member of the team, Susan will assist in developing the Registered Medical Transcription (RMT) and Certified Medical Transcription (CMT) credentialing exams. She is hoping that MSU - Great Falls students will sit for the RMT when they have graduated.

Whatley is also working on having students participate in an externship through AHDI that will help with job placement. "This doesn't require us or them to do anything different," she said. "They would just transcribe scrubbed dictation (real dictation, just not live) for a real company and be learning the doctor's and platform for specific accounts with the opportunity to test and be hired for those accounts."

The annual ServeMontana Symposium is a two-day conference focused on providing training and resources for national service programs, nonprofits and organizations that use and support volunteers. Foxman is Pure Gold

If you haven't become aware of it yet - where have you been! President Cruzado recognized Marty Foxman as Pure Gold in her monthly newsletter and it has gone viral. He's been on the front page of the Montana section of the Tribune, he was interviewed by KFBB which ran a nice piece during their nightly news segment, and it was posted on our Website to boot. But it is a noteworthy achievement; one he shares with our other Campus members, T.C. Knutsen and Val Smith, who have been nominated by co-workers as going above and beyond their job description to embody the Campus mission.

According to the nomination sumitted by Natalie Nefzger, Marty "inspires students during orientation to do their best, helps new students navigate the FAFSA, and provides team building and goal setting activites to many groups on our campus and other campuses in the area".

Black History Month celebration

In celebration of Black History month, the students of Dennis Veleber's on- campus Introduction to Sociology classes discussed possible projects and activities for MSU - Great Falls.

The projects selected included decorating display cases on campus, creating a compilation of video clips that will be played on the TV in the South Court, and posting an informative picture and comment board across from the Freedom Shrine. One student created cupcakes for her class with flags that portrayed African American inventors and their famous inventions. The students were unanimous in their goal of presenting a positive portrait of a race of people who persevered and prospered despite adversity.

These projects seek to illustrate the incredible history of African Americans and to highlight just some of the many valuable contributions that they have made to our country. Instructor Dennis Veleber was tremendously impressed with the ingenuity and initiative displayed by his students in the creation and implementation of these projects. The students of these two classes hope that you will appreciate and enjoy their work.

Count-down to Commencement!

This year's commencement exercises will be held across the street in the University of Great Falls McLaughlin Center (their gym), with a reception for the graduates, their families, and our campus community on our campus in Heritage Hall and the Atrium.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5 in the McLaughlin Center.

More will be shared with graduates and the campus community a little closer to the event.  Graduates will again work through the Book Store on campus for their caps, gowns, and invitations.

I want to thank Julie Rummel for chairing the Reception Committee.  She welcomes anyone wishing to assist with the planning and putting on of the reception, and to volunteer, please contact Julie.

Thank you also to Dena Wagner-Fossen for chairing the Program Committee.  Likewise, if your heart is in the actual ceremony and you wish to volunteer to usher, help set up, line up grads or faculty, or help in any way, please contact Dena.

This is one of the biggest events we put on for our college, and it is with many of you helping that it is always a wonderful celebration of all we are here for every day.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and participation!

History of Film course slated to begin in March

Award winning filmmaker Doug Wendt, who's been featured on Saturday Night Live and worked on the Oscar nominated film Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation, will again be teaching his History of Film (The Magic of the Movies) class at MSU-GF.  It's being held on 5 consecutive Mondays March 19th - April 16th from 5:30pm - 8:30pm.
Doug Wendt 2
In this intriguing mini-course students will get to watch and talk about several great films in between some fascinating background and contextual information.  Folks will learn how recording the moving image began as little reality shows but soon morphed into magic, comedy, drama, documentaries, movie palaces, huge financial success, and many styles in a powerful world-wide art form that encompasses all the other arts. Other major technical innovations plus how public relations, propaganda, politics and censorship influence film's growth will also be covered, from Melies to
Hugo.

Films from Thomas Edison, The Lumiere Brothers, Georges Melies, Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Fritz Lang, Federico Fellini and others will be seen on a big screen along with Betty Boop, Busby Berkeley, examples of Expanded Cinema and more.  The class ends with a lesson on how and why CGI, Computer Generated Imagery, has nearly changed everything.

In the modern world we are surrounded by screens. Much like alphabets are essential to oral and written expression, moving images developed many non-verbal ways to communicate constructed upon basic building blocks that it's important to understand and appreciate. Wendt's History of Film will consider motion pictures as a narrative art form and a unique language unto itself including its place as a cultural and commercial commodity, political object and an avenue of escapist entertainment rooted in the theatre and beyond.

For more information and to sign up go to our website,
or register in person at the College. The deadline for registration is March 16th. Space is limited.
