Common Ground dark leaf A Common Ground Update

Closing the Assessment Loop is a Common Ground team that is continuing work on assessment of learning that has been going on for several years.

The team has completed a checklist that functions as a cover sheet for the syllabus template, helping faculty keep track of whether the syllabus addresses all the basic requirements, such as the Eight Abilities, Course Outcomes, etc.  The syllabus includes the Phase III forms of the Assessment Loop - outlining the outcomes and objectives and how they will be accomplished. At the end of Fall Semester, all faculty members also will have completed Phase IV of the loop for at least one class. Phase IV is for the faculty member to assess what was intended in Phase III -- whether it was achieved and what needs to be corrected or revised.

Susan Cooper is developing a D2L shell that will contain information on conducting the Assessments.  This online outcomes assessment course will act as a resource for all faculty, providing tools and examples of the process.  The course will not have a formal instructor, but will have discussion groups and other functions of an online course. Also, at the end of January or early February Kim Woloszyn will conduct an Assessment workshop for each division. Faculty will review the D2L course prior to the workshop , then come with a Phase IV form from Fall Semester. Faculty will be paired up and review and critique the forms.

The Phase IV assessment will be applied to all courses offered in Spring Semester. It will be applied in subsequent semesters to new courses and to those that weren't taught in Spring Semester.

MSUGF Wind Turbine Production FAQs:

Submitted by Mel Lehman, Wind Montana Project Manager
Recently someone stopped me in the hall and asked me about the electrical energy produced by the wind turbine here on Campus. Our total production since April 9, 2010 has been over 161,000 kWh. That's enough electrical energy to power about 16 homes for a year based on the National average for residential use, which is about 1000 kWh per year. Montana's average residential use is slightly below the National average, but not much.

The electrical energy produced by our camps wind turbine on an annual basis, based on our first year of production, is about 100,000 kWh. This production supplements or reduces the amount of power we need to draw from the NorthWestern energy grid. All of the energy our wind turbine produces is consumed in the electrical circuit that supports the Skilled Trades Building. We consume about 200,000 kWh per year in this circuit, so our turbine is producing about 50% of what we use.

By producing some of our own energy here on campus, we reduce our demand for energy from the grid, and by so doing we are also reducing the amount we have to pay NorthWestern Energy for their electrical energy. The reduction in our electrical bill for the Skilled Trades Building circuit since we started generating a portion of our own power is about $1000 per month on the average.

Since the chillers for the entire campus are on the Skilled Traders Building circuit, in the summer time when the chillers are in use, the electrical energy produced by the wind turbine serves the entire campus. When the chillers are off, the electrical energy produced serves only the Skilled Trades Building.

I have attached a slide which shows our Skilled Trades Building consumes electrical energy at a level above the National average for such buildings, so it is helpful to be able to generate some of our own energy to offset this consumption.

Common Ground dark leafCAPP 120 Changes for Spring Semester

Students and instructors in CAPP 120 will have a few changes during Spring 2012 semester -- part of the Common Ground Computer  Skills team's efforts to evaluate and modify the course in order to better prepare students for online and technical courses. Based on input the team received from faculty during fall semester when Bruce Gottwig and Donna Eakman interviewed faculty, the following changes have been made to the CAPP 120 class. We will see how this works during spring semester! If all goes well, we will continue with this content again in the fall.

Topics to be covered:

  • Terminology, hardware and software, Internet structure and basic use, and basics of networks
  • Operating System and File Management
  • The course still will cover the following specific software:
    • Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
    •  Word: Several instructors mentioned the need for good Word skills-we will go one chapter deeper in the textbook and add tables to what has previously been taught.
    •  Excel: Stays the same. Access: Stays the same.PowerPoint: Just the basics will be covered.

Congratulations, TC! You're Pure Gold!

TC Pure Gold
From President Cruzado's Pure Gold! Recognition Program
T.C. Knutson is a staff member on the MSU-Great Falls campus. The following is his Pure Gold Award nomination submitted by his supervisor Heather Palermo.

The effect T.C. Knutson, Montana Campus Corp Team Leader, has had on our campus cannot be measured. In his role as Team Leader, he inspires students and staff to volunteer and to serve the campus and community of Great Falls. T.C. is also developing leaders among our students who will continue to lead service throughout their lives beyond MSU-Great Falls.

He is always helpful and upbeat, which has a positive influence on everyone he comes in contact with. T.C. not only talks the talk of service, but also walks the walk himself; hence he goes above and beyond his requirements of service. He is a coach for a third-grade boys' basketball team in the community and helps coordinate volunteers for the Heisey Youth Center.

He has a reputation for getting things done, always with a smile on his face. On our campus, he has been instrumental in starting our on-campus food pantry and helping our Veteran's Hospitality Center become an integral part of the college. In addition, T.C. has a way of connecting with all of the students on campus. From his elephant jokes to his laugh, T.C. is an inspiration to all of us on campus. Every day, T.C. reminds me of the importance of serving but also the importance of accepting everyone on our campus. There are few people who truly inspire but T.C. is one of them and he makes MSU - Great Falls a little brighter with his presence.
