MSU-GF Recognized as Military Friendly School

MSU - Great Falls College of Technology was recognized by the G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly School. Annually the magazine honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's service members and veterans as students. The 2012 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide.

The 1,518 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience. These schools are making the grade by offering scholarships and discounts, veterans' clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those who served. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. For more information click HERE.

Students bring in boxes of food that will stock the shelves of the newly created EAT-IN food pantry.

.

Campus Corps and EAT-IN invite you to our new food pantry in room B104. EAT-IN (Eliminating Appetites To Inspire Now) will offer nutritional food, essential toiletries, and information on other human need programs to Montana State University - Great Falls' students in a compassionate environment. This resource will help alleviate both financial and family stress, so students can focus on their education.

Every student qualifies to use EAT-IN; they are required to show a student ID and a current class schedule obtained from banner. After filling out a simple demographics survey, students can choose what food they need off of our shelves, often leaving with up to three days worth of food. EAT-IN is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3-5 p.m.

Feedback into College!Now
Rebranding and Mission Initiative

Dear Campus Community,

Several weeks ago, Dr. John Cech was on campus to host listening sessions on the College! Now project, which includes the rebranding of the College. While many of you participated, there have been inquires as how to continue the conversation. There are several options available and Dr. Cech would love to continue to hear your thoughts on the concept of rebranding and/or mission expansion at the five Colleges of Technology.
You can visit the College! Now Facebook page HERE  and leave a comment. Another option would be to visit the College! Now blog HERE to leave a comment or to see what others are saying. Finally, you can contact Dr. John Cech (jcech@montana.edu or 406.444.0316) or Sue Jones (sjones@montana.edu or 406.444.0318) in the Commissioner's office directly. It is important to have your voice heard, so please use these above channels to share your viewpoints.

Best,
Joe Schaffer Ed.D.

"Remarkable Creatures" Presentation

The community is invited to join Sean Carroll on November 16th at 7:00pm, as he presents "Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species."  The event is hosted by McLaughlin Research Institute and supported by a K-12 education grant from HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE. The event is free, but RSVPs to admin@mri.montana.edu or 454-6000 are requested.

Rather than have people understand science as disembodied facts, Dr. Sean Carroll believes stories are a powerful tool in teaching.

"This is sort of an all-ages talk about exploration and discovery, and the genesis of big ideas," Carroll said.

Sean Carroll is a Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Wisconsin and the Vice-President of Science Education at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  Dr. Carroll will discuss the most dramatic expeditions and important discoveries in two centuries of natural history and how they inspired and have expanded one of the greatest ideas of modern science: evolution. Sean will chronicle the exploits of a group of explorers who walked where no one had walked, saw what no one had seen, and thought what no one else had thought. Their achievements sparked a revolution that changed, profoundly and forever, our perception of the living world and our place within it.

Cindy Schultz is a Certified Lactation Specialist!

Congratulations to Nursing Faculty Member Cindy Schultz for completing the training required to become a Certified Lactation Specialist. Women have been helping other women breastfeed for millennia. Most often, it is in an informal, mother to mother, woman to woman setting. In the mid 1980's, an international exam was developed by theInternational Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) to certify those who wanted to become lactation professionals. Currently there are thousands of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) around the world working in a variety of settings such as hospitals, WIC clinics, public health, physician's offices, private practice, health clinics, and so on. IBCLCs come from a number of backgrounds - there are those that are health professionals, and those may have a degree in child development, psychology, anthropology, social work, speech, occupational or physical therapy.

It's a rivalry spanning generations.  Every year, the Cat/Griz game inspires competition and sportsmanship between respective teams.  Now, it's your turn to take part in the action!  "Can the Cats/Can the Griz" is a non-perishable food drive for our very own EAT-IN food pantry.  Food boxes will be placed at both help desks and in front of the Learning Center.  Fans will place food in their respective boxes to "can" the other team, i.e. Cat fans will "can the Griz"; Griz fans will "can the Cats."  At the end of every day, the food will be weighed and progress reports displayed next to the boxes.  The competition starts at 3:00 today and will run through Friday.  Winners will be announced throughout campus in next week's Campus News!

Cheers,

T.C.

For all of you who missed a keen Halloween event, The Learning Center has posted 2 videos of the two successful Edgar Allen Poe readings held on Oct. 31. The event drew about 90 rapt audience members, including writing students, Dean Joe Schaffer, faculty and various community members. Marjie McClellan recited "The Raven" and shared enlightening background information about Poe, then adjunct graphic design instructor Jason Beam read with scary zeal "The Cask of Amontillado," a famous Poe short story.
