Radiologic Technology Week Observed

Since their discovery on November 8, 1895 by Professor Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen, x-rays have become a very essential part of medical diagnosis. To honor this discovery and the benefit they have provided, Radiologic Technology Week is observed each year during the week of November 8th.

An estimated 687 million radiologic procedures were performed in the United States in 2008. This total includes CT procedures, MRIs, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine procedures, PET procedures, radiation therapy procedures and routine diagnostic procedures including mammography.

These procedures are performed by radiologic technologists who have completed 18 to 24 months of clinical training and didactic coursework to prepare themselves for a certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). In Montana there are five college-based training programs for radiologic technology. They are located in Billings, Butte, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Missoula. Many technologists achieve additional certifications in areas of specialized imaging such as CT, MRI, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, angiography and interventional procedures, mammography, and bone densitometry.

Radiography is not just limited to imaging of human patients and animals. It has found uses in industry in imaging of welds on nuclear containment vessels at nuclear power plants and seam joints on aircraft. Forestry is another field that has used radiography to determine the germination of seeds used in replanting trees.   In the field of art it has been used to find paintings by the "old masters" such as Picasso that were disguised by painting another image on top of the original. Archeology has used radiography to investigate ancient artifacts including mummies of Egypt and South America. Forensic medicine makes extensive use of radiography to investigate deaths of individuals. The "Iceman" discovered many years ago in the Alps mountains in northern Italy was investigated with radiography and determined to have an arrow wound that may have led to his demise.
