What's in a Name?

The name is not the only thing to change about the Developmental Education and Transfer Division this summer. The division, formerly known as Arts & Sciences, also has a new director. Leanne Frost joined the division and the College in late August. She was formerly the Director of the Academic Support Center at MSU-Billings and oversaw its developmental education courses and tutoring center.
The division's name change reflects the emphasis of the division's courses: the "developmental education" courses in math, writing and biology prepare students for their college-level courses, and the "transfer" courses prepare students to transfer into a program or to a 4-year university.
Because the College has an open enrollment policy, some students are underprepared for the rigor of college-level classes and need developmental education courses to bridge the gap between their high school diplomas or GEDs and college courses.
Through the work of the College's operational plan, known as Common Ground, a team of faculty and staff are looking at ways to increase student success by redesigning the developmental education courses, particularly math. The goal of the Common Ground team is to find a way to deliver the foundational academic information underprepared students need but to do so in an efficient and effective manner so that students can more quickly begin their college-level courses and enter their degree programs or complete their core classes.
The re-naming and restructuring of the division brought another change too. The Learning Center, known for its tutoring and student support, is transitioning to be a part of the division. The inclusion of the Learning Center increases its ties to the academic services of the campus.
Said Frost, "I'm excited to be a part of the changes happening at the College. We're moving in a good direction. The division's focus will be on improving student success."

The following is an excerpt from the Benefis Respiratory Care Week newsletter - What we do! Intubate! Extubate! Celebrate! It's Respiratory Care Week! It's time to acknowledge the hard work of those some-what-superhero's we know as Respiratory Therapists!
Respiratory therapists have important and sometimes difficult jobs. Assuming the primary responsibility for therapeutic respiratory care treatments, therapist work together with Physicians to evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. They complete treatments and diagnostic procedures for a wide range of patients; they are providing life saving and life enriching therapies. Therapists also provide other complex therapies which require considerable independent judgment, such as caring for patients on life support in intensive-care units of hospitals, from the preterm infant to the chronic lung patient.
WOW! What a difference they make! In addition to their demanding jobs, they accept the added responsibility of partnering with MSU College of Technology in Great Falls to act as preceptors for respiratory care students. They spend roughly 19,000 hours each year molding future generations of RT's. Not only do they teach technique and exemplify the highest standard of care, they teach students to have heart because they know respiratory cares.
We've all been touched by their generosity, knowledge and perseverance. It's takes courage to help others and they are constantly impacting the world around them. This week take time to thank your lung care expert and celebrate their dedication to the ever changing horizon of health care.
