MSU-Great Falls Approved for Registered Nursing Program

On October 12th, 2011, the Board of Nursing in Helena approved the MSU - Great Falls Registered Nursing program. The college will intake the first cohort of RN students in the Fall 2012.

The Associate degree RN program will consist of 72 credit hours, based on the State Model Curriculum.  The program is designed to prepare graduates to take the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).  The Registered Nurse program is a limited enrollment program.  Interested students must apply for entry into the program. All applicants must be an LPN or currently in a Practical Nurse program. All entering ASN students must have a current unencumbered Montana LPN license.

An application packet will be available on the program website in January 2012. The length of the program is two consecutive semesters. Twenty students will be admitted into the program each fall.  The Registered Nurse program at Montana State University - Great Falls College of Technology is currently approved by the a State Board of Nursing. Upon completion of the Associate of Science Degree in Registered Nursing, students will be prepared to begin a successful career as a registered nurse.  Students are prepared to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nursing.

The Associates degree RN program will allow our Practical Nurse students the opportunity of a seamless nursing education to the RN level, something which the State model curriculum encouraged.  It will also allow these Practical Nursing students the opportunity that other nursing students in Montana have at this time: the ability to continue at their school of nursing and receive RN education.

Dietetic Technician Program Granted Accreditation

diet tech

The Dietetic Technician Program has been granted candidacy for accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) from the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Graduates of the program will be eligible to become active members of the ADA and to write the CDR Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians. The decision was based upon a peer review of the self-study application, the site-visit report and a response to the site-visit report.

Dietetic technicians are employed in a number of settings including clinical, foodservice, community programs, fitness and wellness centers, and food companies. They are trained to conduct nutrition screenings, manage food service operations, develop and teach nutrition classes, and develop recipes and menus. "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2014."

The first applications will be accepted starting in the spring of 2012. The first program class will begin in the fall semester of 2012. For more information please email Susan Cooper or visit the program's website HERE.

Students Helping Peers "EAT-IN"

AmeriCorps
A new student lead volunteer group is addressing the student hunger problem emerging on the MSU - Great Falls campus by organizing a not-for-profit food pantry. The AmeriCorps led project EAT-IN will offer nutritional food, essential toiletries, and information on other human need programs to MSUGF students in a compassionate and anonymous environment. This resource will help alleviate both financial and family stress, so students can focus on their education.

The food panty is set to open on November 7th. Any MSUGF student will be able to use the pantry, and will be required to show their student ID along with their current class schedule for the semester. The group's goal is to provide services for approximately 20 people per week.

The Great Falls' Food Bank has gifted $500 in support for EAT-IN's initial start-up to include shelving and stock. As a Food Bank partner, EAT-IN will be able to utilize Food Bank stock to be purchased at approximately 19 cents/pound, increasing pantry sustainability. In return, EAT-IN must make a monthly report of families served. The pantry will also be recoginized by MSUGF's Student Government office as an official student group which means they will receive a budget to buy food and also promote and grow the pantry.

Campus Corps has recruited Marissa Hepner and Jessica Beauchamp as their student volunteers who will be managing all of the EAT-IN operations. In return for their service, AmeriCorps, Campus Corps' parent organization, will give them an education award.

Donations and gifts will be accepted. If you would like more information on contributing to the EAT-IN project, please email or call:

Community Care Transitions Coalition

On November 1st, at 7:00am, members of the Great Falls Community Care Transitions Coalition will be on campus to address the desire to improve the coordination of care and patiene self-managment for chronic illnesses. These transitions can be from hospital to home, hospital to nursing home or home health, hospital to community case manager etc.  Mountain-Pacific Quality Health is under contract with Medicare (CMS) to assist selected communities to develop a comprehensive community network that will seek to improve transitions in care.

The group has found that Montana has a 14.8% rate of Medicare hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge. Patients report greater dissatisfaction related to discharges than to any other aspect of care. The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission estimates that up to 76% of readmissions within 30 days of discharge may be preventable.

  • The most common causes of rehospitalization
    • Medication problems
    • Lack of reliable follow-up care
    • Poor patient engagement/understanding
  • The most common diagnoses
    • Cardiac
    • Respiratory
