The Advising & Career Center opened its doors on Tuesday, September 6!  The advisors, pictured above, have been busy with training and getting the new center organized for students to use.

Academic advising and career services are designed to help students succeed and assist them in making the most of their college experience. Advisors will assist students and work with them to plan their educational future. This includes:

  • Short and long term academic planning
  • Interpretation of COMPASS/ACT/SAT test scores
  • Providing information about transfer requirements
  • Selecting the right courses for the student's major
  • Information on registration procedures and class scheduling
  • Answering questions about college policies
  • Assisting with academic concerns and special needs
  • Career counseling and major exploration
  • Assistance with resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills
  • Job postings on JobWire
  • Listening carefully to your questions and concerns

The Advising & Career Center will work across campus with students, faculty, and staff to outline the advising program at the College. The Center will be working as part of a Common Ground group to further flesh out our Advising Program including our mission, goals, and student outcomes. We welcome any feedback from students, faculty and staff as we start on this exciting endeavor to support our students as they work to reach their academic and career goals.

All new students have been assigned to an Advisor in the Advising & Career Center. If students are unsure of who their advisor is, they can look in Banner Web or contact either the Advising & Career Center at 771-5100 or Student Central at 771-4414. The Advising & Career Center is located in R220 (at the top of the ramp across from the Learning Center). Please feel free to stop in and say hello!

Around Campus

Mary Kay Bonilla, Executive Director of Human Resources, has been selected to sit on the President's Commission on the Status of University Women. The 24-member commission formed by Montana State University President Waded Cruzado will study, evaluate and advise her on issues related to diversity and gender equality. Some of the issues the committee will identify are institutional strategies to improve campus climate, alleviate the isolation of women in academic and work units through hiring and retention initiatives and accommodate the needs of diverse workers.

Ninteen MSU-GF nursing students participated in the 5th Annual Veteran's Stand Down event by taking all of the Veteran's blood pressure last thursday.  These students, as well as the nursing faculty, were inspired by the veterans they talked and interacted with. It was and always is a great clinical situation to start the nursing program. MSU-GF also took part in a booth that focused on educational opportunities for veterans and their families. Veteran's were provided with information about the GI Bill, Veteran's Tuition Waiver, and federal financial aid. Campys Corps Team Leader T.C. Knutson even visited with a WW II vet about the process to receive an honorary Montana high school diploma!  Veteran's Specialist Julie Rummel, TC Knutson and many of the veteran students manned the booth. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with veterans and active duty military, their families, Stand Down volunteers, and other service providers. The college also provided free bags for veteran's.

New Employee Orientation for recently hired MSU-GF employess will be on Friday, October 7th from 8:00am-12:30pm. Lunch will be provided. New employees will receive an Outlook invitation shortly.

Discrimination and Harassment Training for MSU-Great Falls employees is now available in Banner Web/MyInfo. The mandatory training is a web based resource to educate employees and increase their knowledge and ability to prevent and respond to discrimination and harassment. Training must be completed by Friday, October 21.
