Changing Lives - Achieving Dreams
April 26, 2010
Greetings!
As an AmeriCorps VISTA, my project is uniquely designed to help enhance the welfare of the students and the welfare of the college. Towards that goal, many of you know I have been working on campus conducting surveys, focus groups, and research to assess the barriers to education, the desires of our community, and the desires of our students. We all play a role in shaping the future of our school and of our community, and this is your chance to hear what's been done, what's to be done, and how you can help!!!

Please join me May 6th from 3:30 to 5:00 in B101, so I can share with you all the process, the information gathered, and the vision of what we intend to do next. Refreshments will be provided!

I hope you all can join me!

Thanks,
Hannah Ruehl

Student Ambassador Program
MSU - Great Falls is proud to announce the establishment of the Student Ambassadors Program on campus.  This leadership based program will be a select and prestigious group of dedicated students who will serve as College representatives to stakeholders such as prospective students, current students, donors, alumni, and community leaders. The program will be administered through a one credit course beginning in the Fall of 2010.

Please encourage students to attend the Student Ambassador Interest Luncheon  April 28 · Noon on the  Atrium Skywalk

Ambassadors will have the opportunity to be involved within a cohort that focuses on personal leadership development through the advocacy of the College. They will be active in the recruitment of prospective students who are interested in pursuing their own educational goals at the College, they will also be engaged in the establishment of an alumni association at MSU - Great Falls, and will interface with community leaders and legislators.

Upon completion of the program, Ambassadors will have had the opportunity to substantially impact the College through their efforts to advance public higher education in the Great Falls area. They will also receive a letter of commendation from the Dean and will enjoy a 10% discount at the COTtage Bookstore while serving as an Ambassador.

It takes a 'village'
Submitted by Cheryll Alt
I wanted to let you know how the MSU Great Falls "village"  welcomed, and educated five students and one teacher from Fort Belknap recently.  Liz McClain had emailed me, and set up a time and date to bring students from Fort Belknap College to MSU Great Falls to show them what we had to offer, especially in the health science programs.

Everyone I contacted in advance was eager to meet with these students.  And because nursing had their advisory committee luncheon, Liz was able to attend and share her thoughts with other healthcare professionals in Great Falls.  Natalie and Lanni welcomed the students, made them very comfortable, and then Natalie showed them around the campus, while recruiting them at the same time.  During this time, Liz was able to meet with Judy and Greg concerning transferability issues, which were all resolved, right then and there!  Judy was also able to give Liz, and the students a "go to person", Dana Freshly, so the students would feel comfortable, and more likely to ask questions, and not walk away.

We then went by the bookstore where these students looked over the clothing, and several got smoothies, which they really enjoyed. I then took the students upstairs to the nursing lab, and talked with them about nursing. Then Greg talked with them about the other health science program, especially radiology, and respiratory.  I then took the three students interested in dental hygiene downstairs to meet and talk with Kim about her program. She gave them an in-depth tour of the department, and talked with them for about 30 minutes.  While students were meeting with Kim, I took the other two students to financial aid, and Julie talked with them about grants, scholarships, financial aid, and Native American waivers.  By this time they were tired, happy, and very well educated.  They left smiling, and promising to come back.

All of these people went out of their way, did a little extra, and made these students, and teacher think very highly of MSU Great Falls. What a village!
The WoRC program needs you!
Submitted by Jacki Goldhahn
The WoRC program is looking for volunteers (possibly senior college students who could gain participation points-grades from volunteering) who could teach soft skills to small groups of participants' in the WoRC program in 2 or 3 week intervals. The topics for the 1-2 hour classes needed for the soft skills program vary. Some of the classes involve teaching conflict resolution, understanding and coping with stress, managing family, managing time, motivation, learning or personality styles, resume writing, interviewing, PEP (personal employment plan), or any communication skills. If you would like more information, or if you would like to volunteer and teach these classes, or involve your students in this relevant and needed activity, please Call Marlene Olson @791-5870 or MOlson2@mt.gov.
